NHL April 2019/ Playoff Thread

The last few regular season games will be played this week and then the greatness of the NHL playoffs start. Some teams are still jockeying for their final spot in the standings and won't know their first round opponent until the last game ends.

Ottawa finishes last but that is hardly a surprise. Personally I am amazed how both the Kings and Ducks fell off a cliff this year. The Oilers have wasted another year of Conner McDavids' prime. And speaking of falling off a cliff, early in the season, Buffalo was kicking ass and taking names- they had a 10 game winning streak but end up missing the playoffs. It sure looks like Tampa is in position to run away with everything.

I'm not holding out much hope for the Leafs against the Bruins. The Bruins have one great line, but also good defense and goaltending.

The Leafs have three good lines but are lacking in defense. Andersen is one of the top 5 goalies in the league, but I just can't see the Leafs winning this series, unfortunately.

Does anyone think the Isles are going past the first round? If everything falls into place, I think they play the Hurricanes, but it's much more likely that they play the Penguins.

During their game against the Leafs, one of the commentators noted that four out of five of the Leafs on the ice during a power play had more points than any of the Islanders. Teamwork is nice, but it would great to have a star or two.

I love the fact that none of the first round match ups are set. If the Stars win their last 2 games and St. Louis loses their 2, they would both have 95 points but the Stars would have one more win.

And the Canes make the playoffs 10 years to the day we last did. Now we just gotta beat Philly, and hope chaos gives us favorable seeding.

Hearing grumblings that if the Oils are at this same point next year, Connor might want to go elsewhere. Half of me sympathizes with him, the most talented player on the planet, languishing with these perennial bottom feeders, but the other half of me is like, shit - that would sooooooooo gut the Oilers fans, who, despite their team's suckiness, faithfully fill up the rink (11th highest attendance this season - for the Oilers, that is), and see CM as their only flickering hope, the only source of light in an otherwise constantly bleak situation.

Won't be the first time they've put themselves in the position that if they don't win the Cup, they'll look like the biggest play-off chokers, as has been the case all too often since '04.

Nah, I'd be happy with just boring teamwork instead. Their defense and goaltending is formidable.

Yeah, winning the President's Trophy and scoring a metric shit-ton of goals is cool and all, but the postseason is a different beast.

I watched my team (Caps) go down in flames in the playoffs after seasons like that. I think it's partly because in the playoffs the opposing teams have more time to study you and come up with, and refine after multiple games, strategies that nullify advantages you had in the regular season. Also, I think that after you've spent a season steamrolling your opponents it can be easy to get complacent.

Since the President's Trophy was introduced in the 85-86 season, eight winners have gone on the win the Cup. Six have gotten bounced in the first round.

Well, we didn't get home ice, but at least we're not in the wild card, so that's something! But overturning that goal of Crosby's was fucking bullshit.

OK, here we go! Game 1 tonight.

On the subject of the coach of the year, Trotz for the win in my book. Not only did he take the Islanders from last to first in goals against (for the first time in 100 years), but he took the same team as last year, less their best player, and took them to a point behind the Caps, last year's Cup winner. I took a look and there are 24 teams who have at least one player with more points than the Islanders' top point scorer (Barzal). Only six teams don't have a better player in terms of points.

Their goalies are hot -- it's a good place to be heading into the playoffs. I wish their PP weren't 29th in the league, though, and probably worse since the all star break.

Guinastasia, here's hoping for a great series! I don't know if the Islanders can stop your top players, but let's hope for at least 6 or 7 games. (Unless the Islanders win the first couple, then, let's hope it's done in four )

What a choke job by Tampa Bay.

Is NHLs first round best of 5? or 7?

Which is what makes it inherently superior to all other methods of determining the champion of a team sport, aside from it being attached to the NHL.

Woot! GO STARS! Nice, tight, fun game. Great playoffs debut by Heiskanen, and generally the low scoring playoff struggle expected between these teams.

Indeed, he was enjoyable to watch, and as the colour commentator noted, he's impressively composed; plays with a cool head in tight situations; fine hockey IQ (what you do away from the puck, offensively and defensively, among other strengths that are not quite as tangible as the much more easily observable shooting, passing, hitting, etc.).

So, what did happen there? I watched the first period, and the Lightning were dominant. I assumed it would be 5-0 or 7-1 or something by the end. Then, I switched to the Islanders game and sometime in the third period, the announcers said that Columbus won. I had to see for myself! Anyway, did TB fold? Did Columbus come on strong?

The NYI-PIT game was fun to watch. The Isles got the puck past Murray 5 times, although one was rightfully called back on an offsides. However, Martin being offsides didn't affect the play at all. Good call, but they really did get past him 5 times, which is unusual for the Isles. The local commentators were complaining about some missed holds and tripping done by Pittsburgh and a really iffy call against Anders Lee for boarding. I'm curious about whether the national commentators said anything -- Butch Goring isn't the most neutral color guy (he's the second most ). Any comments about that from the national broadcast?

Vasilesky just let easy pucks go through. Obviously, no shot is "easy" in the professional level, but they weren't even goals based off of really good puck movement or anything like that, just straight shots that he let go through. The Columbus goalie also settled down a lot and their defense tightened a whole bunch.

I thought Tampa looked way too complacent in the third, losing too many individual battles in the corners and along the boards, and Vasilevsky coulda kept out a goal or two, but not this beauty, as David (no, not Denis) Savard made one of the best defensemen on the planet (Hedman) look foolish, and then poping one high blocker.

Interesting: don't know if I can think of any other regional colour dude who regularly covers the team he used to pay for. (Mickey Redmond and the Wings, I spose)

ETA: oop - ninja'ed by Sir on Tampa.

Missed edit window on another ETA - actually looking at the Savard goal again, I thought that looked very strange how Hedman almost turned away from Savard, to (quite unconvincingly) make it look like he was deked out of his cup. Extremely half-assed looking, to say the least.
Weird.

I think Ken Daneyko and Chico Resch do the job for the Devils, and they both played for the Devils. (It was easier to find this for the Rangers, but I think I got it right).

Nah.

I like to pretend I'm knowledgable about hockey, but I've only really followed it (lightly) for the past 3 years or so (definitely aided by my local-ish team being very good). I don't know the ins and outs of the game at all. Your explanation was welcomed.

Ah yes, and then there's Rob Ray doing colour with his former team in Buffalo, and former Flyer Kieth Jones doing colour in Philly, so maybe not as rare a thing as I thought.

If you're watching CBC for the Calgary- Colorado game you'll note that Cassie Campbell is the colour commentator, and she is great.

ETA: Very knowledgeable.

Not exactly the result I wanted ,but not bad for being out of the playoffs for 10 years. Plus Svetchnikov scoring 2, and getting chippy with Ovetchkin was nice.

Previous Caps teams would have blown that game. Most of the current roster has been playing together for a very long time. They are going to be a very tough out.

Exactly, they’ve been under the radar all season with all the attention on Tampa Bay. I’d love to see Columbus take out Tampa in the first round in what would surely be one of the greatest NHL playoff upsets of all time.

I'm amazed how Columbus is handling Tampa. Everything that was good for Tampa in the regular season seems to have evaporated.

Keep in mind it was just game one, though.

From an individual standpoint, kinda pullin for 37-year-old Mike Smith, who got his first play-off shut-out. Who cares about his ugly, mottled face - the league's best puck-handling goalie will hopefully not get pulled in any of the series he plays.

The Islanders haven't been up 2-0 in a playoff series since 1983! It will be weird having a few beers around noon on Sunday, but I feel it's my duty as a fan.

I think it's funny that there are fewer NHL fans on this board than, for example, fans of some obscure 16th century battle or something. There are so many obscure topics on this board that get more attention than a thread about the NHL playoffs. This place is odd.

I fully admit I only have a passing interest in the Capitals because they are unquestionably the best pro sports team in town, by A LOT, but true to being a native Washingtonian, I naturally just care much more about the shitty Redskins, the shitty Orioles (I grew up with them, and not the Nats), and even the shitty Wizards (DC United is not even on the radar). I can't help it, it's how I was raised.

I do enjoy watching hockey games, even though I don't always 100% understand what the announcers are saying, but without cable it's almost impossible to see games on TV. It's better during the playoffs of course, but even then, I only get the weekend games. If an important game is on during the week and it's not the finals, I'm most likely shit outta luck.
