I keep supermarket bread for months in the fridge. It never molds. And I don’t notice any significant stale factor. Obviously it’s not quite fresh, but it is good enough and doesn’t have a stale flavor like crackers or cookies eventually get.

Real bread gets rock-hard in the refrigerator, but I usually get baguettes, which have to be eaten in a day or so anyway.

So generally speaking in the modern wwirld the fridge works adequately for storing bread and bread boxes are less in demand.

If I kept bread in the fridge I wouldn't have room for anything else!
