Don't press tab and space

Cause if you do, your post will be posted before you are ready.

Is this a bug or a feature?

You're right. I just tried that and it submitted my post before I was ready.

Remind me not to try that again.

Try it. I touch type, and since tab doesn't work I then press a space, without thinking. This posts your reply, when you are in the middle of drafting it. I vote it's a bug

Well, I rarely press tab, so it's unlikely I'll do it accidentally. It's cool to do once you're aware of it, though.

Here, hold my beer wh

ETA ... Ah, I see what's happening. The 'post reply' button is next in tab order after the reply box. In edit mode, the 'save' button in next. So tab does what it's supposed to do, move to the next object that should have focus. The space bar does what it's supposed to do, push/select/activate whatever form object has focus at that time.

Yeah, I see that now. When I press tab, "Post Quick Reply" gets highlighted. I would think that "Enter" would activate it instead of "Space." Learn something new every day.

Space activating a button is a somewhat general activity. I only know of tab order and using space to activate things from creating MS Access forms--as early as 1997 I think.

I've known about this (and been using it on message boards) for about 12 years now. It works on most message boards and also Facebook (when you're writing a status or post). It's gotten to the point where I don't even have to think about it anymore.

Here's two previous instances where I mention this feature on here.

It's a feature. Tab moves from field to field in most windows applications. Space will press a button if you happen to be on one.
BTW, Shift typically does things backwards. Tab moves forward from field to field, Shift+Tab moves backwards. In a browser window, space will be the same as page down, Shift+Space will work as Page up.

Don't press tab and space

Speaking of which, you should never ever push the History Eraser Button. The beautiful shiny button. The jolly candy-like button ...

Oh, and don't press alt-F4.

Go to any website. Click anywhere on the page that's not a button or link. Now press tab. Press it again. And again. See what's happening? Now press space.

Of course this only works on some systems. I imagine it's A Windows feature? On Mac OS with Safari the tab+space doesn't act that way. If I'm in the Quick Reply box, typing away, and press Tab, the Forum Jump drop-down is selected. If I then press Space, it shows me the list of Forums in the Forum Jump drop-down.

That is one of the things you would eventually tab to, but it's odd that it goes from the quick reply box directly to the forum jump box. On my browser it has a few other things to go through first to first.

Actually, just testing it, tab goes from the quick reply box, to post, then advanced, then a few of the links, then back up to the top, then meanders to the page and eventually back to the forum jump drop down. It's actually much faster to get there by Shift+Tabbing backwards, then it's only a few steps.

That's the same behaviour as what is being described in this thread - the only difference is that your browser is interpreting the order/availability of form fields differently for some reason.

Interestingly, on OSX and Firefox, tab just toggles between the text box and the "post quick reply" button, without ever going to any other link or control. If any other link or control is active, tab goes to the text box, and into the same box-button loop. And if the URL box is active, then tab goes to the quick-Google box, and then to the entire content of the window, and then to the quick-reply text box.

Here, LMGTFY:

From W3:
Quote:
17.11.1 Tabbing navigation

Attribute definitions

tabindex = number [CN]
This attribute specifies the position of the current element in the tabbing order for the current document. This value must be a number between 0 and 32767. User agents should ignore leading zeros.

The tabbing order defines the order in which elements will receive focus when navigated by the user via the keyboard. The tabbing order may include elements nested within other elements.

Elements that may receive focus should be navigated by user agents according to the following rules:

1. Those elements that support the tabindex attribute and assign a positive value to it are navigated first. Navigation proceeds from the element with the lowest tabindex value to the element with the highest value. Values need not be sequential nor must they begin with any particular value. Elements that have identical tabindex values should be navigated in the order they appear in the character stream.
2. Those elements that do not support the tabindex attribute or support it and assign it a value of "0" are navigated next. These elements are navigated in the order they appear in the character stream.
3. Elements that are disabled do not participate in the tabbing order.

The following elements support the tabindex attribute: A, AREA, BUTTON, INPUT, OBJECT, SELECT, and TEXTAREA.

In this example, the tabbing order will be the BUTTON, the INPUT elements in order (note that "field1" and the button share the same tabindex, but "field1" appears later in the character stream), and finally the link created by the A element.
Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
<HTML>

<TITLE>A document with FORM</TITLE>

If all it does is delete my desktop files, I'm not interested.

Kent Clark, it is a combination of how "tab" and "space" work in web pages* and the sequence of the fields of the edit window and the "Submit Reply" button.

In web browsers, "tab" sends the cursor to the next active field. We expect tab to work in the edit window like it does in a word processor, and provide tab. Instead, it works like a web browser. This is how it works in other non-word-processing functions on the computer. The next active field in most browsers is the "Submit Reply" button.

Then comes the "space". Apparently in web browsers, hitting the space bar is a way to activate a button by using the keyboard instead of requiring a mouse. If the button is the active field, space activates it. Ta da! You get an accidental premature epostulation.
