One of my favorite contemplative poems:
Quote:
How I love to watch the morn with golden sun that shines,
up above to nicely warm these frosty toes of mine
The wind doth taste of bittersweet,
Like jasper wine and sugar.
I bet it's blown through others' feet,
like those of . . . Caspar Weinberger.
Opus the Penguin.

This poem so impressed Mr. Weinberger that he requested (and received) the original art.

Which mountain? Do I have to climb it, or can we drive to the top. It's not going to be one of those treacherous jobbies that require a special transmission and heavy-duty brakes, I hope.

Our AZ house is located at 5500-foot elevation. Is that high enough? I can really rest there! Being "out in the middle of nowhere" is incredibly calming. Plus, we have a waterbed there. OMG, it's like crawling into a cocoon!

What was the topic again?

If I were the Queen of Hearts, I'd get to run around screaming, "Off with their heads!"

(and then we're back to those damned deer mice!)

Jesus ~VOW, I laughed out loud so hard the cats flew to the beams. They're looking down at me with the 'stink eye'.
I told them it was your fault. I also mentioned the deer mice and how bad you hate them. They might forgive me for laughing out loud. ()

Hey, wait just a dang minute!
This was my personal pity-party thread.
I've laughed at every post.
How's a gal supposed to have a respectable pity-party if she's laughing? Huh?

Laughing is a better alternative than crying, isn't it Beck?

If your friends on the SDMB can make you laugh in times of troubles, isn't that a good thing?

I've been here almost twenty years, and my SDMB friends have supported me through many personal crises. And they've made me laugh while doing so. I've supported them also, sometimes with serious and sage advice; other times, with a quip that I hope makes them laugh and brightens their day.

If you're laughing, Beck, then the Dopers have done their job.

I've had a few trials to deal with in the past 24hrs. I'm an optimistic person. It takes a big thump to get me down and more thumps to keep me down.
Thank you guys. I love my Dope and you Dopers.()

Reminds me that earlier this week while driving home, I drove past Mount Shasta. Usually it’s covered in clouds but this time you could see the summit. I found it beautiful.

I hope you’re feeling better today, Beck.

Daughter got married partway up a mountain. Wilderness, no signal, so dozens of 20-somethings with no phones out, it was great. BUT it was full of ... people. (I typed that with maximum disdain)

The whole time that I was in a majestic temperate rain forest, I was inundated with friends and family that I was obligated to chat with. I couldn't wait to get back to the big city, find an anonymous crowd and have time all to myself.

So first day back I packed up my book bag and my noise-cancelling headphones, plopped myself in the window seat of a coffee joint, and watched a sea of people (NONE OF WHICH I KNEW) hurry by.

Ah, isolation mode. Very therapeutic...

ETA: Glad you're better, Beck!

As I recall you are in the southern, flatter part of AR but you are (relatively speaking) not far from some really beautiful mountains.

Isn't that a song the Soggy Bottom Boys sang in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou"? Was that filmed in Arkansas?

No. As soon as I saw the title, I (1) knew what it meant and (2) guessed that at least 50% who see it won't.

Count me in the half that didn’t know. I thought it was a song, but it was the wrong song. Thanks for the link Darren.

It is truly a beautiful song. Here’s Vince Gill, and I think that’s Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless with him too — https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6jXrmAKBBTU

I adore this song. I find it hard to listen to, though. I was so horribly affected at my Dsddys death. I'm still, after a few years, grieving. I have many sibs who do not understand my grief. They want me to 'get over' it. I just cannot. I should've seen a grief therapist. Instead, I wallowed in it. I'm much improved now. It was bad though. I wouldn't wish this pain on my worst enemy.
Thank you guys for letting me indulge in my self pity for a bit.
It helps to have a place to vent.
I'm in a better place today.

{{{Hugs}}} and love to you, Beck. You are blessed to have had your Daddy. And Im confident that he was very blessed to have had you.

Please let me apologize if this discussion makes you sadder. I subscribe to the thought that A joy shared is twice the joy, and a sorrow shared is half the sorrow. But not all feel that way.

My wife tears up at this song, because it reminds her of her own father The Leader of the Band, by Dan Fogelberg.

Beck, I hope and pray that your moments of sadness soar up high to the joys of mountain summits when you remember the greatness of your father, and may he live on through the testament of your own life, and those of your family, and then we all benefit as you make this world a better place.

Thank you.

Friend Beck, sometimes the melancholy is a needful thing. A few glasses of wine, and an old movie, and a sad but wonderful memory of my Mom just lets me remember her fondly. It has been 19 years and I miss her every day.

*hugs the Beck*

This year hasn't been kind. I've suffered a number of losses of people I care about, and my job is making me crazy. I've had mornings when I couldn't get my sorry butt out of bed, due to feeling blue.

But, I remind myself that I have friends (including here!) who are there for me, and who help keep me going. That helps a lot.

Sending lots of positive energy your way.
