No, the most likely scenario is that whoever is in charge of enforcing the building permits realizes that trying to enforce this is trouble than its worth and so the violators win. I was just noting that to the people building the wall, there is no reason to bother getting all the paperwork in order.

Well, there is this:

Border wall on private land near El Paso lacks necessary permits, local officials say

Am I the only one who read this rather, umm, specific detail of reportage including the "appeared to be" and thought of the infamous pitcher of "peach tea" in the Senate hearing room in Batman v. Superman?

More from FL state Senator Dennis Baxley, introduced above:
Quote:
Baxley’s well-established anti-abortion stance also got a heavy dose of anti-immigrant racism when he essentially said the country needs less abortions to keep “western” culture alive and well.

From WLRN:

Quote:
[Baxley] also suggested that access to abortion is deteriorating the fabric of society and warned of its economic and demographic impact.

“When you get a birth rate less than 2 percent, that society is disappearing,” he said of Western Europe. “And it’s being replaced by folks that come behind them and immigrate, don’t wish to assimilate into that society and they do believe in having children. So you see that there are long range impacts to your society when the answer is is to exterminate.”
Also recently,
Quote:
The Ocala senator has been a regular voice for keeping Confederate statues prominently displayed in public spaces. But in 2017, Baxley also tried to block a statue from being erected in Florida that was dedicated to the history of slaves. At the time, the senator argued that he wanted the monument to focus on the lives of the slaves, and not the institution that caused the suffering. Gee, I wonder why?

History is important, so let’s also not forget Baxley’s history – like how he authored Florida’s incredibly racist Stand Your Ground bill, or the time he refused to disavow a pro-Confederate group just days after the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, or that other time he sourced an Islamophobic fringe group for an anti-climate change bill.

Newt Gingrich weighs in on the 'Muller' statement, via Twitter:

Quote:
Muller tried today to have iut boith ways. If he thought President Trumpo was guilty of something he should have said he was guilty of something. Ken Starr used the word guilty 11 times on 11 different counts in his report on President Clinton. If not guilty Trump is innocent.

Representatives take the role of prosecutors and defense attorneys during the trial in the Senate (with the Senators as the jury).

You know that census citizenship question which totally isn't aimed at decreasing Democratic votes? Well, the GOP strategist who decided on that totally innocent question died recently and his daughter found his thumb drives and you might be surprised to find out that apparently his intentions were actually to disadvantage Democrats.

The answer, obviously, is to make abortion illegal for white women and mandatory for black, brown, Mooslim, and non-English-speaking women. Not sure about them orientals-- yeah, they're smart an' all, but there are an awful lot of them. Better include 'em, 'cause they're smart enough to take over. We want white, Christian, high-school-edumacated working people.

Yes, those that are members of the House Judiciary. However, Newt was not a member of this committee, being the Speaker (until his resignation from the Speakership in 1998).

And it is not without the specific intent of putting some violent ideas out there. Not that they would want anyone to follow up on their ideas, oh, no, they would be shocked, shocked if someone were to actually follow through on the "metaphor" that they invoke.

this is as good a place as any to bring up this shit

It is an inspiring short video that was displayed at a Fresno Grizzlies baseball game on Memorial Day, featuring a heartfelt speech by old Ronnie, which I have cued up to about thirty seconds before the objectionable part, in order for the meat of the intended message to be fully clear.

As he is saying “… these are the enemies of freedom …” we are treated to images of: a person (woman, I think) wearing a mask that says "antifa"; a picture of Kim Jong-un; a picture of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; a picture of Fidel Castro; and two more images of black-clad street protesters.

Castro is buried in the ground. -un is fairly insignificant to us, other than the fact that Individual-1 wants to have sex with him. That leaves some of our own citizens, including an elected official, as the important enemies of our freedom.

And he wants to build the wall where?

There needs to be space for Karl Rove in there. It was he who developed the idea of a permanent Republican majority. Its his playbook that Mitch is following so successfully.

ETA: I mostly included the link as an introduction to Rove's tactics, but reading it fully its amazing how prescient it given it was written 9 years before Trump's election.

That's true. But AIUI, the impeachment managers (equivalent to the prosecuting attorney team, again, AIUI) are HoR members.

It's also relevant to note that the articles of impeachment were voted on in the HoR on December 19, 1998. Gingrich relinquished his seat on January 3, 1999. So he would have been part of that vote.

And as a history professor, it seems unlikely (at least to me) that he would have been asked to be one of the impeachment managers even if he had retained his seat (and gavel).

Fun little anecdote: On Sunday, November 8, 1998, Harry Shearer opened his NPR radio program Le Show with the announcement (to the best of my recollection): Ladies and gentlemen, history was made in Washington this past week when Newt Gingrich impeached HIMSELF.

What it lacked in correctness about what "impeachment" means, it more than made up for in delighted guffaws from me.

I mean, a simple bit of wiki research would help here. As I said earlier, the House members who worked on the impeachment trial were the Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee:

He had already bailed and gone home. The vote (in a lame duck session, including by members who had already been voted out of office for saying they'd do it) was held without a functioning Speaker.

Heineken International and Sun Maid Raisins have withdrawn their sponsorships from the Fresno Grizzlies after the Grizzlies ran a video including AOC among American enemies. Remember, this is Fresno. Sun Maid Raisins are a BIG deal in Fresno.

Florida State Rep. Mike Hill (R-Pensacola) jokes about filing a bill to execute gay people:

Quote:
A citizen comments: “In 1 Corinthians, it says that a man who has an affair with another man will be put to death.”

Hill’s response?

“It says that in the Old Testament, too.”

Another attendee asks, “Can you introduce legislation?”

Chuckles are audible. The state representative joins the laughter. “I wonder how that would go over?” Hill says.

I think that once the conservatives are satisfied that they've legislated vaginas enough, they're going turn their attention toward gay rights, and it'll get nasty.

I'm fairly certain that's not what it says in that particular book. Wasn't Paul ordering church discipline, such as excommunication or disfellowship?

Also, it doesn't matter a whit what any religion's book requires. Introducing "Based on the requirements in the Bible" is a violation of SOCAS.

Remember that W Va. GOP official who called Michelle Obama. An “ape in heels” and the GOP fell over itself trying to whitesplain why it wasn’t a racist comment?

Well she just went to prison for defrauding FEMA.

The conservative press is de-legitimizing science, de-legitimizing factual truth, and instead providing an increasingly sophisticated ecosystem for conspiracy theories and ethno-nationalist polarization.

He was just headed to a costume party. And he was actually peering into windows trying to scare a different woman.

That's the response from his attorney. Sounds legit.

That's the response from his attorney. Sounds legit.
And he got bored and decided to kill some time by... yeah. Makes perfect sense.

SANCTIONED RUSSIAN OLIGARCH'S COMPANY TO INVEST MILLIONS IN NEW ALUMINUM PLANT IN MITCH MCCONNELL'S STATE
Quote:
Rusal, the aluminum company partially owned by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, announced plans to invest around $200 million to build a new aluminum plant in Kentucky just months after the Trump administration removed it from the U.S. sanctions list.

The new aluminum plant, slated to be built in the home state of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, will be the biggest new aluminum plant constructed in the U.S. in decades. Rusal will have a 40 percent stake in the facility.
...

The U.S. removed Rusal from its sanctions list in January, after the Treasury Department struck an agreement with the company that saw Deripaska, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, reduce his stake in the company to below 50 percent and lower his voting rights to below 35. The agreement requires the companies to report any contact between Deripaska and company affiliates, including members of the board.

McConnell was among the advocates for lifting sanctions on Rusal, arguing that the deal with Treasury would maintain pressure on Deripaska personally without disrupting global aluminum supplies.
...

Still, analysts have expressed concern that Deripaska, who was sanctioned in April 2018 for attempting to meddle in the U.S. elections, may still wield influence over his companies from behind the scenes.
....
Nah. Nuttin' to see here. Move along.

There is ample precedent for this sort of move, especially when Vlad reduced his position from President to Prime Minister. Or was it the other way round?
