Yes, building an athletic team on the basis of diversity quotas would be incredibly stupid. Fortunately, no one on earth does that.

If you are being sarcastic, is there a team your sarcasm is targeting?

No sarcasm. I was responding to the Fox News exec who saw a diverse US Olympic team and assumed, without any evidence, that it was because some politically correct quota had been imposed. To the best of my knowledge, no sports team on earth uses racial quotas -- just athletic ability.

Anti-hooker Utah state legislator caught having sex with a hooker in a hotel.
https://nypost.com/2018/02/09/lawmak...x-with-escort/

Surprising it wasn't a male hooker, considering Republican secret tastes.

I just wish Williams had been a better writer. THE GREATER TRUMPS should have been a brilliant fantasy novel. As it is it’s just barely readable. William was the poorest stylist of the great mid-century Tolkien/Lewis/Williams triumvirate.

By far the greatest of the period was Mervyn (Gormenghast) Peake, who unfortunately didn’t share the other three’s fancy-schmancy Oxford credentials, only having gone to Art School. Of course, HE has a self-portrait in London’s Portrait Gallery, and Tolkien/Lewis/Williams don’t.

Peake is like Thomas Wolfe: a writer best read when one is a teenager. Both are great writers--I don't dispute that! But both are extravagant and somewhat florid. And their plots tend to fall apart at the end.

And in an effort to stay on-topic, I just did a search of "Republican caught." Page one has a whole list of fellows caught doing naughty things in the past few months, including:

Quote:
Nov 16, 2017 - Self-proclaimed conservative Christian Ohio state Rep. Wes Goodman resigned from the legislature Tuesday after admitting he had sex with a man in his government office.

Dec 13, 2017 - Ralph Shortey is a perfect example of the phrase, “Thou who protest too much.” You may not have heard his name, but the former Oklahoma state Senator and senior member of Donald Trump's campaign team in Oklahoma, who was against LGBTQ rights, pleaded guilty last month to child sex trafficking.

Nov 22, 2017 - WASHINGTON — The heightened scrutiny of sexual impropriety on Capitol Hill has swept up a senior House Republican [Joe Barton] who apologized Wednesday for a sexually explicit photograph that wound up on the internet ...

He's a Utah Mormon Republican Politician (as if there is another kind in that state). He HAS to say that. It's in the contract.

Yeah, no doubt. When Wolfe killed off Neal Cassaday at near the end of Acid Test, it all just seemed to collapse.

Woosh? (Of course I meant the T. Wolfe born in 1900, the Look Homeward, Angel one--not the snappy-dressing Kool-aid one who's still with us.)

Thank you for clearing that up. I though you were talking about the big fat private detective one who lives in a Manhattan brownstone and grows orchids, and for a minute there I was afraid you were losing your marbles.

Right. You should have picked up on the fact that he “killed” a character in a non-fiction book.

This is from a couple of days ago-- just came across it.

At Olympics opening ceremony, Pence refuses to stand for any country except the U.S.
Quote:
Athletes from North Korea and South Korea marching under the same flag in the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games was a significant symbolic moment for many. Vice President Mike Pence, in Pyeongchang to lead the U.S. delegation, was not impressed, however.

The Washington Post’s Anna Fifield described “huge cheers” when the unified Korea team entered the stadium on Friday. She also said it appeared that everyone in the VP’s box stood to acknowledge the moment — except Pence and his wife, Karen.
...
That's really grown-up of him. I'm surprised he didn't take a knee.

Didn't know about this.

As another indication of the tone he plans to set at these games, Pence brought the parents of Otto Warmbier — a student who suffered severe brain injuries while being detained in North Korea, and later died — with him to Pyeongchang.
What else can he sabotage?

When it was announced that Pence brought along the parents of Otto Warmbler, I turned to my wife and said "of course he did". His sitting stoned-faced looked childish; it made the whole country look foolish. I'd like to know what the US athletes were doing when the joint Korean team came in (I know they were standing and cheering). If they were cheering, does that mean they're anti-American? or just anti-Trump? or just decent humans?

Guy who was a liberal, from a strong liberal family, meets woman in college, breaks up with her and gets back together with her repeatedly, ultimately marries her. Why is that important? She was the one who 'convinced' him that he was really a Conservative, not a Liberal.

Now he's got the zeal of a convert.

The GOP's latest plan to punish the poors; cut everyone's food stamps by half and replace it with a box of nonperishables that gets mailed to you, which will no doubt be cookie-cutter, low-quality, and unappealing (remember government cheese?)

This one could get some pushback from business; food stamps are a major source of revenue for grocery stores (especially budget stores like Walmart, Winco, or Aldi) and a cut that large would cut into their profits severely.

Years ago, I was working in the County Food Stamps data processing. Due to computer problems, and then a post office mixup, the monthly food stamp mailings were several days late in arriving one month. Several million dollars arriving late.

One County Commissioner had a friend of his, owner of 3 grocery stores in the poorer section of town, walk into his office and show him a large bill, saying "that's the bill for the extra shipments of produce I had delivered the first week of the month. Yesterday, I threw most of that in the garbage, because it was outdated. But I still had to pay the bill for it. And pay the extra staff I hire for the that week. It cost me a whole lot of money! Including the money I would usually contribute to your campaign.

That person had barely stalked out of the County Commissioners office when the Commissioner was on the phone to the department head, demanding to know what had happened and especially what they were doing to make sure it didn't happen again.

There were a whole lot of businesses who felt the impact of that problem, and it was just a slight delay -- a 50% cut would probably kill some small businesses.

And that 'government cheese' was reasonably good cheese.
It's just that it came in 10-pound blocks. What's a single mother supposed to do with all that? There's only so much grilled cheese sandwiches & macaroni and cheese etc. that you can feed the kids in a month. And then another 10-pound block the next month?

Nah -- they're Republicans. They would have them shipped via UPS, FedEx or other private enterprise companies, who can make campaign contributions.

It's when you see what the Republican party is proposing (fiscally) to do to the federal government as we've come to know it that the GOP's behavior really starts to make sense. They're actively colluding with Russia because they want Putin to help them destroy the modern version of American democracy, which will help them destroy public power and the power of public institutions to defend public interests. The GOP members of congress are employees of their billionaire donor class. They're on their payroll (legally). Destroying the federal government - and its ability to defend public interests - is what they've been instructed to do, and it doesn't matter how they do it. "Treason" isn't really a crime in their view because treason is a crime against the nation-state - they're basically trying to destroy or redefine America, the nation-state.

In the medium term, that would work against your postulated strategy, if indeed they are following that. Because having the postal service around is better than getting rid of it because they can make it seem to be very inefficient by loading it up with a lot of pre-loaded expenses and use it as an excuse to get rid of other spending in the guise of "private efficiency". If they actually got rid of it people would realize that the replacement wasn't actually more efficient.

In the long term of course it is one of the final things they will get rid of.

It came in 5 pound blocks. At least when I was getting it.

As a single person on a tight budget I had no problem going through 5-10 pounds of cheese a month. 10 pounds a month is about 6 ounces per day. I eat about 4 ounces of cheese most days, even now, usually for breakfast.

Cost effective drone air drop delivery of cost effective 5 and 10 pound bricks of cheese made even more cost effective by not using chutes. Just another offensive offensive in the war on poverty poor people.

Which is the point of the whole enterprise. Hey Nabisco, how would you like Nutter Butters to be included in the Box o' Nutrition we are sending out. All it takes is a $20 million contribution to my superpac.

And we've all heard the nutritional makeup of a snickers really satisfies, that's gotta mean it's good for you.

Am I the only one who thinks they'll cut the food stamps, and then not bother making the delivery program even work?

Not at all.

Making such a huge change to the system would involve thousands of people to make it work. If it could work at all. trump is so, so stupid. Just where is this food going to come from? Just where are you going to deliver it to? What about people that only have PO Boxes, just how clogged up will that make the local post office? The additional bureaucracy of such a system would double the cost of food stamps. And so it won't happen. "Because, we tried to feed people, but it was too costly". Another excuse that he tried to help, but fucked over those less fortunate.

Not that that isn't the republicans plan.

Another one of trumps grand ideas that can be shot down in 2 minutes.

Got to be a penalty for being poor, otherwise, people wouldn't sacrifice time and dignity to avoid it. And then the whole system breaks down.

You gotta suffer to sing the blues. And even if you don't particularly want to sing the blues, you still got to suffer. But now, you can sing the blues. So it all evens out in the end.

How much sugar is going to be in these care packages and which of Trump's friends owns the nonexistent company that's going to get the juicy contract to distribute them?
