Not a household name. A face everyone should recognize. The epitome of a working character actor both on screen and on stage. Donald Moffat dead at 87.

He had one of the great lines in cinema, as Garry in John Carpenter's The Thing:

"I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH! "

To me his most memorable role was as LBJ in The Right Stuff throwing a fit because Mrs Glenn wouldn’t let him in the house.

Loved him in "Clear and Present Danger."

And what I wouldn't give for Harrison Ford to burst into the Oval Office and have that "how dare you" exchange with Trump:

The President: How dare you come in here and lecture me!

Jack Ryan: How dare *you*, sir!

The President: How dare you come into this office and bark at me like some little junkyard dog? I am the President of the United States!

Rule 3(d): you cannot reap more than 82 points on one pick.

Which might raise an interesting question. Can you pick a 17y/o, in hopes that they make it to 18 before they cash in? Too early and you get no points?

Well rule #2 says that all picks must be made by Dec. 31, and rule #3 says that valid picks cannot be under age 18, so I would interpret that to mean that all picks must be 18 or over on Dec. 31 (of the year before the contest). A pick of someone under 18 would be invalid when picked, and not eligible to be played.

In preparing my 2019 list I may have missed one...

A Legacy of Words: Saskatoon Writer Jordon Cooper dies of Cancer

I'm not real happy about this.

Here I am, with a new year coming, trolling the internet looking for people likely to die next year. And I've got my list together. But I'm unhappy about it.

Fnishing in the top 5 is nice, but a year ago, I didn't know who Jordon Cooper was. Stefan Karl Stefansson was nobody to me; Devin Liam, Liam Miller, Leah Bracknell: didn't know any of them. I didn't care.

John McCain? Old, cancerous, served. I respect him.

But, by the end of the year, he'd be gone, like my father.

I don't feel guilty putting him on a death pool list, but I feel bad trolling the internets looking for younger people who are so sick that their misfortune might help me win a stupid contest. It strikes me as perverse.

Like those Ive added to my list for 2019, most of my candidates I hadn't heard of until the last week of December, 2017. Of my new additions, I may have heard of one or two.

Just some thoughts. I think I'm owed 44 points. Good luck in 2019. I'm going for First. But this game sucks the soul from you. Peace.

7 Points, a Unique Pick, and perhaps the "Final Hours" award.

My fourth top-10, 200+ point year:

2018: 6th, 227 points
2017: 7th, 234 points, led for 1.5 months*
2016: 8th, 208 points
2015: 2nd, 296 points, led for 3 weeks**

* And had the illusion of being in the lead for an additional 2 months on the strength of the points for al-Baghdadi, who turned out to be alive after all, dammit.

** And then was in second place by four measly points for the last six and a half months of the year. RAL 300, RTF 296, from June 15 to December 31. Still can't believe neither of us got another corpse the whole rest of the year.

I want to give another shoutout to phungi for doing this in 2017-8!!! To take it up in the middle of the game, in 2017, was a big deal.

I encourage everyone to check their lists, search Wiki's Deaths in 2018, or otherwise Google/confirm any overlooked "losses".

2018 is in the books, and here are our winners:

The "Opening Kickoff" Award: Rico (January 3rd)
The "Quantity Not Quality" Award: TIE: CAMJAY777, Registered at Last each with an impressive 8 picks
The "Grim Reaper" Award: irritant with 4 Unique Picks
The "Robbing the Cradle" Award: SHARED: Team Dirt, basset hound, GIGObuster for Jessica Falkholt at 29 years of age
The "Final Hours" Award: GuanoLad (December 29)

Final Standings, pending last-minute revisions, congrats to CAMJAY777 with an impressive 454 points, and a 50-point lead.

It's been a pleasure to lead this twisted endeavor, and I can only look forward to one day gaining high enough celebrity status to be listed!

Impressive.

Me -

2012: 2nd, 274 points
2013: 1st, 385 points
2014: 2nd, 239 points
2015: 4th, 252 points
2016: 1st, 482 points
2017: Did Not Play
2018: 1st, 454 points

Some may call us sick for doing this. but we're not as sick as some of our picks,

Played for years on another board before 2012. I remember back for 2006 my brother told me about Ironhead Heyward who I didn't know was ill. Liked him as a player. Big points for him.

I did not mean to imply that phungi was not wonderful, as I am in the themed pool also and do not want to piss off the death mushroom for crying out loud. What it is, I just forgot what thread we were in and thought I was, you know, sucking up to the death mistress in her thread. So now that I have completely messed up the sucking up, I suppose no one will die for me this year. Oh well. Welcome to the New Year, same as the Old Year.

the shroom of death does not experience emotions... like a proper fun-guy, he simply grows on you...
