April Fools' Day is also Easter Sunday this year...

What's your best Easter-themed April Fools' Day prank idea?

An acquaintance of mine suggested: Get a stuffed rabbit, dress it up like it's been run over or something. "Sorry, kids, Easter is cancelled this year." Pros; bound to get a reaction. Cons: cruel and mean-spirited. Could traumatize kids. Yeah, I think I'll pass on that one. But there must be some good ideas out there!

Hmmm. How long do you think an insect or a spider or a slug would stay alive inside one of those plastic Easter eggs?

Side-step:

As small kids, every Xmas my aunt would tell us she caught Santa's beard in the car door. Ah, memories, memories.

Nah, too mean.

Get a plastic egg and instead of candy, put a hard-boiled egg inside.

Of course, have one with candy inside to swap with the kid for.

Hire one of those 'freeze' actors / NYC street performers, give him a body harness on a wire, rigged to a pulley at the top of the church. At the appropriate time...have him rise from the cross.

I'm a balloonist, we frequently take off from a church parking lot. We had a flight scheduled on an Easter Sunday a few years ago (which was ultimately cxl'd due to a unfavorable forecast change.) Yeah, I bought a Jesus costume.

It is one of those occasions I wish I was still working in a zoo; the practical jokes involving eggs are endless; get a rubber egg: 'OMG, THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST BIRDS IN THE WORLD, IT'S FINALLY LAID AN.. oops!'

I suggested whoopee cushions at the Communion rail Easter Sunday Morning but the Priest said no. Apparently Episcopal Priests have no sense of humor. He also nixed the idea of a stink bomb in the Censer.

My friend whose family goes all out for Easter told me that she was thinking about announcing an Easter egg hunt and sending everyone searching all morning for eggs without actually hiding any.

Google google images for "crucified easter bunny". I put a couple of those on my web site once, pre-facebook, and got a lot of flak from neighbors. Apparently the irony is lost on some people.

There's an anthology movie called, "Holidays," that has an interesting take on Easter/the EB and other special days--not really for kids.

There's also a funny/horrible short story called, "Death to the Easter Bunny!" that's worth a look.

swampie
, our priests can so have a sense of humor! Did you ever see the t-shirt inspired by Robin Williams "Top Ten Reasons to be an Episcopalian"? When I was taking the class prior to joining my congregation, the provost teashing it quoted from that shirt! I think it was #7 "Being Episcoplaian means you don't have to check your brains at the door."

As for pranks, plastic eggs with slightly softened Tootsie Rolls inside.

A few years ago a related holiday (Palm Sunday? Maundy Thursday? I forget) fell on April Fools Day. My wife asked me how we celebrated that holiday at the church I grew up in. I nonchalantly described the ceremony of my church growing up, the Easter Chase, where the pastor acted the role of Jesus fleeing the Pharisees in Jerusalem while all the children chased him around the church shouting and waving our fists. She was, of course, astonished, and I was in turn incredulous: didn't you celebrate this day like this when you were a kid?

I kept making the story more and more outrageous ("We locked him in the church kitchen for three nights and three days!"), until finally she figured it out. But when I posted the anecdote on Facebook, I was met with another round of astonished friends--several of whom didn't get it even after I posted that when we chased the pastor around the church, they played the Hymn of the Church of the Benedictine Hill.

You can't beat the old t-shirt:
