Dobie Grey's Drift Away

Give me the beat boys and free my soul, I want to get lost in your rock and roll and drift away.

Greatest song about songs in the history of songs about songs

Other nominations?

How quickly we forget. It was Barry Mann, a prolific songwriter, and a dude I worked for in the 1970's.

This is kinda weird. First time I heard this song I coulda sworn I heard Mr. Spaceman. I thought that's what the song was, it could have been that parody. I rarely get song lyrics right but I was surprised the next time I heard the song and it was clearly Mr. Bassman. But that line, "I want to be a spaceman too!" was stuck in my head forever.

I'm singing this note 'cause it fits in well
With the chords I'm playing
I can't pretend there's any meaning here
Or in the things I'm saying

But I'm in tune
Right in tune
I'm in tune
And I'm gonna tune
Right in on you

The Beautiful South - Song For Whoever

Quote:
I love you from the bottom of my pencil case
I love you in the songs I write and sing
Love you because you put me in my rightful place
And I love the PRS cheques that you bring

Cheap, never cheap
I'll sing you songs till you're asleep
When you've gone upstairs I'll creep
And write it all down
Down, down, down...

"Last Song" by Edward Bear:

Quote:
t's the last song I'll ever write for you
It's the last time that I'll tell you
Just how much I really care
This is the last song I'll ever sing for you
You'll come looking for the light
And it won't be there

In the 'Peel back the curtain' division we have Blues Traveler's 'Hook'. It's a song about how easy it can be to write a song that people will buy.

Quote:
It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks
Because the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely

The Guitar Man - Bread

Bread has many great hits and The Guitar Man is one of their best about the music industry.

Who draws the crowd and plays so loud
Baby it's the guitar man
Who's gonna steal the show
You know, baby, it's the guitar man

He can make you love
He can make you cry
He will bring you down
Then he'll get you high
Somethin' keeps him goin'
Miles and miles a day
To find another place to play

But the treat of the treat
Is when they serve up those fine eight beats
You'll wanna spend the rest of your brights
Down at the House, the House of Blue Lights

Many versions; Asleep At The Wheel is my favorite.
