Born in Washington, DC, furthest distance I've been is to Maunabo, Puerto Rico, 1593.34 miles (2564.23 km). I have, in fact, been to places that are further apart than this, but all of those places are closer to my place of birth.

Here I thought I'd be bringing some real numbers by having traveled in a land down under, but my 9,547.34 mile Lakewood, Ohio USA to Sydney, NSW Australia doesn't even break the 10,000 ceiling. That's 153,644.1 meters, though, which sounds more impressive.

Helpful reference:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipodes

There are only a few places on Earth that have land antipodes. Spain and New Zealand, northern coast of Canada/Siberia/Greenland and Antarctica, China and Chile/Argentina, SE Asia/Indonesia and the Amazon basin, Hawaii and Botswana, plus a few random oceanic islands. If you're not from one of those areas you'll never get to travel to a land antipode from your birth.

Since I was born in Seattle, the closest I can get is Kerguelen at 11,850 miles. Madagascar or Mauritius are pretty close. For Brits it's going to be New Zealand, for East Coast Americans it's going to be western Australia.

Sacramento, CA to Rome, Italy - 6164 miles

ETA: It looks like the distance shrunk by 12 miles since December of 2011...must be Continental Drift

According to http://www.antipodr.com/, there's an island "French Southern & Arctic Lands" as well as "Heard Island" (both in the southern ocean) that come pretty darn close to a land antipode (antipod?) for Seattle.

To the OP: Washington DC to Doubtful Sound, NZ: 9208. I hope to break the 10K barrier on my trip to Australia, but that isn't until 2017.

I traveled from Poland Warsaw to Denver, Colorado USA. And then from Denver to San Francisco. So it's 8534 km and 2012 km. So it's going to be 10 546 km from home.

Brisbane to St. Petersburg is 14, 500 km and that is not all that unusual.

I might have one of the smallest numbers for someone who has still done a lot of traveling, since I grew up in Western NY and have traveled to London, Madrid, Key West, western Oregon, and Los Angeles, and apparently the farthest of these is Madrid at 3800 miles.

Born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, and visited Geneva, Switzerland, 18944 km / 11771 miles. We actually drove all around Switzerland and some other parts of Europe so we may have got to a more distant point.

Philadelphia to Sydney, 9863 miles. They give it in hundredths of a mile, which is silly since that's not much more than the distance to my next door neighbor.

Western New York to southern California, just about 2300 miles. In high school I thought that the Kerguelen Islands were the farthest point on land from my hometown, and I have been fascinated by them ever since. I haven't made it there yet though. Now I see that parts of Western Australia are closer. No matter, I still want to visit Kerguelen.

My birthplace is Mooresville, North Carolina, USA. The farthest I've traveled from there, I think is Adelaide, South Australia, a distance of 10220.86 miles or 16448.43 kilometers.

I live zero distance from my place of conception, actually. My home occupies the same exact geographic site the original home Grandpa had built, and into which my parents moved after they married.

At one time, I lived over 800 miles away for 8 years. But now I'm back, and have been since 1995.

If you were born in the continental US, the antipode for your birthplace is somewhere in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar (West Coast) and Australia (East Coast), so either Australia or some Eastern/Southern bit of Africa is going to be be the farthest you can get on land.

I get 9353.73 miles from my birthplace in CA to Uganda. Maybe someday I'll sail out to the antipode of my birth and get a full half Earth-circumference. Then the only way someone could beat me would be to be born closer to the equator where the earth bulges out more.

Born in northern New York. I currently live in western New York, about 325 miles away.

I believe the furthest away I've ever traveled is San Antonio, Texas, about 2000 miles away.

Lexington Ky to Shenzhen China - 8076 miles

BUT - there was a trip I took that started in Lexington, went to London - then to Tokyo - then back to Lexington thru Seattle - so, I managed to go 'all the way around' on 1 trip.

The crew of Apollo 13 will be tough to beat. One of them must have a singular claim to farthest ever from birthplace, it would depend on the rotational position of Earth when they hit their farthest point

FWIW, I've spent time in both of those cities. My parents moved to Heidelberg after I went off to college, and I visited Hilo in 2016.

In any event, I was born in Houston, Texas, and as best I can tell, the farthest west of Houston that I've been is O'ahu, which is about 3,900 miles to the west. The furthest east I've been is Pompeii, which is about 5,815 miles from Houston in the other direction.

I've been under the pack ice north of the North Slope of Alaska; I've been to the North Pole; and I docked in Tromsø, Norway (the third largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle), but all of these are actually closer to Houston than Pompeii is.

I've never been to South America, Africa, Asia, or Australia. For all the travel I've done in my life, I've evidently not strayed all that far from where I was born.

ETA: I just realized that I'm responding to an 8-year old post. Nevertheless, it's an interesting thread, and it seems to still being going strong.

I was in a similar situation back when I was in college. I went to college across the street from the hospital where I was born. I was also living in my grandparent's house while in college, which was the same house I was brought home to as an infant when I left the hospital with my mother.

8700 miles from NYC to Pattaya Beach, Thailand though the route was more circuitous.

Maybe 9,500, maybe 10,000 to the furthest point on the water in the Indian Ocean.

I live 42 miles from my first home though 3.78 miles from where I grew up.
