What causes headaches? what is a headache?

Im just curious what causes them and how they work. Anyone know?

Most headaches are muscle tension. Heat, massage and rest can relieve them.

I get about six different kinds of headaches, all from different causes. What kind are you curious about?

Here’s one cause:

Man 1: Don’t you hate it when you take a… a…
Man 2: Ballpeen hammer?
Man 1: Yeah, yeah, a ballpeen hammer. You take it and you…
Man 2: You strike it against your forehead until you begin to black out?
Man 1: Yeah, yeah. Then you stop, and this piercing pain goes right through your skull?
Man 2: Yeah, I hate it when that happens.

Most ehadaches are either:

  1. Muscle tension. Basically, a muscle in your melon becomes tight and causes your noodle to hurt. Any one of a thousand things can cause this; stress, fatigue, booze, eye strain, grinding your teeth, changes in weather, and God only knows what else. Two Aspirin and some rest will fix 99.999% of headaches.

  2. Migraines. Migraines can be much, much worse than headaches, and are caused by vascular tension, e.g. blood vessels in your head constricting. Some people are very prone to them. They can be almost cripplingly painful and are harder to deal with. There are specialized medications to deal with them, of varying effectiveness, although your standard over-the-counter pills will still help. By and large migraines are better dealt with just as they begin; once they’re full blown they’re hard to stop. Migraines can also be caused by a lot of different things; stress, dietary triggers, booze, weather changes, and a zillion other things.
