Since only the planet’s smartest people hang out at this site, let me put forth a question put to me by someone else:
Why exactly was a cup of coffee called a “Cup Of Joe”?
Cause a ‘joe’ is your best friend. IE:
joe "jo\ noun often cap [fr. Joe, nickname for Joseph] (1846)
: fellow, guy <an average joe>

I remember reading somewhere that cuppa joe came from cuppa java–a common word for coffee for a long time, since the best came from Java.
Supposedly GIs in WWII somehow corrupted ‘java’ to ‘joe.’
There’s a legend out there that goes as follows:
The U.S. Navy used to serve alcoholic beverages on board ships. However, when Admiral Josephus “Joe” Daniels became Chief of Naval Operations, he outlawed alcohol onboard ships, except for very special occasions. Coffee then became the beverage of choice, hence the term “Cup of Joe.”
I do not vouch for the accuracy of this story, which sounds a bit fishy to me.
Big Iron–I agree with your skepticism, but come to think of it, I think that was one of the etymologies I read about. So could be.

Yeah. But which one is it. Cuppa Joe or Cup of Joe? I like the generic term Java myself.

Fer cryin’ out loud, yerself. When was the last time you got served in the forepeak? I seen gobs go up the hawsepipe. I never seen an’body stay for’rd o’ it.
