Sopranos question - Christopher is Tony's nephew?

In the show, Tony always refers to Christopher as his nephew. But how are they connected? Neither of Tony’s two sisters are Christopher’s mother, and I don’t recall Carmella having any siblings.

Anyone out there know how they are supposed to be related?

More specifically, Christopher’s paternal grandmother is Carmela’s aunt.

So, Tony technically isn’t really related at all, and Carmella is Christopher’s third cousin?

According to Alphagene and the family tree on the HBO website Carmela and Christopher are first cousins once removed, not second cousins. Carmela and Christopher’s mother are first cousins because they share a grandparent. Christopher is a second cousin to Meadow and A.J. because they share a great-grandparent. Likewise, Meadow and A.J. are first cousins once removed to Christopher’s mother.

What makes it confusing is how during the fourth season, Tony is always telling Chris that he can trust him, because “you’re my blood.” When in fact, Tony & Chris are not blood-related at all. Not sure if it was an oversight, or deliberate irony on the writers’ part.
