To find out how influential genes are, Professor Bailey and his Australian colleagues surveyed 5,000 members of the Australian twin register about their sex lives and their parents. Identical twins, who have the same DNA, were compared with non-identical twins, who have different genes.

The study found interest in casual sex was about 50 per cent heritable. The same genes probably accounted for this “substantial” genetic influence on behaviour in both men and women, Dr Bailey concluded. Any influence from observing parents appeared “trivial”.

So, does this mean lecturing your promiscuous daughter is an exercise in futility? Will top geneticists be able to isolate the floozy genes?
