I’m in the gym 5 days a week. I run, bike, ski, weight train, swim (grudgingly despite the fact that it’s good for me). I’m physically fit and I like the sense of health and accomplishment my workouts give me.
But I cannot stand the pro and college sport scene!
In fact, any sport scene where fans and media actually obsess over game/performance stats.
Now I’m a fan of Le Tour and enjoyed Lance win his 6th Tour. I’m bummed that since the Crazy Canucks, Canadian skiers have not shown much tallent in downhill skiing compared to the rest of the world. But I don’t obsess about the stats of individual athletes to the extent that I see happening in sport bars and sport pages.
The idea of fantasy football leagues sends me into the stratosphere for it’s complete absurdity. I mean, it’s not enough to compulsively obsess and work out stats of a real team. Now fans make up fantasy teams and obsess over those stats!
And if just one more person leaves the sports section in the bathroom stall, I may have to take a life - it may just be my own.
I don’t get it. What does fitness have to do with watching sports? Most of the people I know who watch a lot of sports are some seriously out of shape motherfuckers.
I think the OP is just baffled by the incredible amounts of intellectual and emotional investment in something that is essentially a form of passive entertainment.
There is something about competitive sport, it seems in all modern societies, that allows for this. You are much more likely to get someone to drone on about sports stats than director’s stats - I personally prefer neither.
The thing I hate about some sports fans is they act like the outcome of sporting events is important real-world news. And if you’re not up on the current teams and personalities you’re somehow weirdly out of it.
Hello? I have my OWN dorky, obsessive hobbies, thank you! I don’t have time to keep up with your dorky, obsessive hobby as well!
BTW, just to illustrate the point further… wasn’t there some kind of statistic during this last presidential election about a democratic win/loss based on a football game win/loss?
To think that people actually take time to compile this kind of statistic and that it catches media attention… :smack: <shudder>
