I was talking to a guy who had been to antartica. He told me that some of the dry valleys there have lakes in them, and under the ice, the water in these lakes is quite wrm-warm enough that algal life can live in them. Do fish live in these lakes? How does the algae survive the dark winter months? What is the heat source that keeps these lakes from freezing solid…is it volcanic heat!
How long have these dry valleys been free of snow-do they date from the last Ice Age, or are they older yet?
Scientists speculate that Mars might have such lakes-is this possible (given the low atmosperic pressure)?
