The knee levers and pedals on a pedal steel guitar

I’ve always had an affinity for the pedal steel guitar, and have done a little research about it. However, players of this instrument are somewhat rare; I wonder if one exists here, or someone suitably knowledgable to answer this query, the answer of which I cannot find elsewhere:

I know that the pedal and knee levers raise and lower the pitch. My question is, how exactly is this, i.e., which pedals and levers do which? Is it calibrated in a universal manner as a piano keyboard is, or is it entirely preferential? Are there favored “presets”, if you will, if there isn’t a standard?
