The filmed at least the pilot in Georgia (in fact, they actually drive into Atlanta in the pilot) but then moved to California as it was a lot cheaper.

And they filmed the first six episodes in Conyers, GA (about 25 miles from Atlanta by Interstate). You can really tell a difference when they moved to California- Georgia doesn’t have any land that looks like most of what they show on the series.

That’s right, I should have remembered it was Conyers where they also shot “In the Heat of the Night”. Conyers is a little to the SE of Atlanta but is too far out to really be a suburb.
