I heard a rumor that e-mail was originally short for Eudora mail. I am aware that Eudora was the first graphical email client, but I’ve been unable to substantiate this rumor by googling, even by examining Eudora’s website. My friend, however, insists he “read it somewhere.” Could it be possible? Or does he deserve a smack upside the head?

e-mail was called e-mail LONG before graphical interfaces.
It was e-mail in '88 when I got to college, and collected e-mail on the VMS (VAX) system in place there.
I’m sure it was e-mail from day one.

According to the OED, the first cite for the term “email” was 1982 (as a shortening of “electronic mail”).
According to Qualcomm (who makes it), Eudora was first introduced in 1988.
