Discussing the rockumentary Dig the other day, we wondered at how both bands featured - Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dandy Warhols - had puns as names when there were so few others that do.
The only others we managed to think of were The Beatles and Beasts of Bourbon – but there must be others. What are they?
btw, we discounted U2 because it could just be the name of a spy plane, which just happens to sound like “you too”.
Dread Zeppelin
You Too?
Dam!! Missed that discounted thing :o
… other than tribute bands. (Dread Zepp is a tribute band, isn’t it?)
Lipps, Inc.
Timbuk 3
The Newlydeads
Kathleen Turner Overdrive
and my favorite: Shitty Shitty Band Band
The Ditty Twisters.
Extreme might qualify. As I recall, the some of the members were from a group called ‘Dream.’ Extreme = Ex-Dream.
Yes? No? Maybe?
The Band?
Sinomatic (Cinematic, Sin-o-matic…eh, either way, they were FAR better than Buckcherry when I saw them at the House of Blues).
There was once a band named “Thunderpussy” that played at a local club. Maybe there’s another somewhere called “Octaball.”
For some reason that reminded me of another: Sunscreem.
Not a pun, per se, but the Ben Folds Five had only three members.
Has anybody read A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius? It has a whole bunch of them. I remember JFKFC and Scott Beowulf. I think there was a Robert Downey Jr. Mint in there, or something like it. A bunch of good ones.
I meant to add that those aren’t real band names, but someone may have appropriated them since then. They’re good ideas, anyway.
Contraband
Sniff and the Tears
Mary Tyler Morphine
Apocalypstick
Apocalypso
Trepanned Nation
Jehovah’s Waitresses
Jehovah’s Witness Protection Program
Jesus Chrysler Supercar
And my personal favorite: Jim Jones and the Kool Aid Kids.
I actually lived with their lead singer for a couple years in college. This was after they had broken up.
Dude. I never got that until now. Am I the only one who totally didn’t get the joke?
Isn’t there a band called the Goblin Cocks?
A certain member of this message board was in bands called Pornado and The Diarrhea of Anne Frank. (It wasn’t me. I’m not that clever.)
