Possible virus attack; firewall down.

System:
1GHZ pentium III
5.1.2600 Windows XP service pack 2 build 2600

My dear little sister checked out an email link, after which she received an alert from the windows system itself that the firewall shut down. After seeing this, she immediately shut down the computer in a proper way.

Having started it myself I find out that the standard-issue windows firewall has been shut down. After trying to access it from the windows control panel I receive the error “Due to an unknown problem settings for windows firewall cannot be displayed” (rough translation from a Dutch errormessage) Recently-updated Mcafee virusscan doesn’t register any activity. I tried to use system restore to revert the system to before the attack, but the only recovery point on there was today, after the attack. This seems most unusual.

Now, a downed firewall and possible infection is bad computer mojo. Does anyone here know any steps I can take form here?
