What is this adult comic referencing?

In this very not safe of work comic (broken archive link below) called “Honor” two warriors exchange cryptic challenges as they rip their clothes off then go all Brokeback Mountain while crying out “Blood And Thunder!” and “Victory At Sea!”

What the heck is this comic referencing?

I’m pretty sure it’s not referencing anything. It’s just a stereotypical high-testosterone fantasy situation that winds up in sweaty sex instead of sweaty battle.

Victory at Sea was a very well regarded, and of course very manly, documentary movie about the US naval efforts in WWII.

“Blood and Thunder” is a generic term for heroic fantasy.

“Victory at Sea” is just a non-sequitur reference to the documentary – which was a TV documentary in the 50s that ran in 26 half-hour segments with a musical score by Richard Rogers. It’s considered a milestone in television and documentary filmmaking and basically showed World War II in the Pacific. The joke is that there is no connection between the two, and that “Victory at Sea” isn’t a battle cry, but the name of a TV show.
