Oh, Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me

This is just one of those “mnemonics” I remember learning, but damned if I haven’t forgottten what OBAFGKM was for. Help!

Classes of stars.

Thanks! Remember the one about the colors on resistors?

While we’re at it, can anyone remember what this one helps us remember?:

“Lessen Urgent Motions To See That All Squirrels Can Be Rationally Sufficient”

All I can recall is that it was for a very important test I had to take. Maybe Chemistry. Or Child Development.

Maybe the DMV test.

Ah, school days!

Techically its the only way astronomy nerds even have a chance of getting laid. The classes thing is just a cover story.

What was the one about Mark’s mother and the Canary?

Instead of opening another line of exploration into this sort of trivia, I’ll insert the question:

Did you ever learn this way of singing the alphabet: Sesame Street: ABC-DEF-GHI Song - YouTube

Also, can you pronounce the three lines of letters on a QWERTY keyboard?

That’s the resisitor thing I recall! Thanks!

No help on Mark and the Canary. Sorry.

Mine was even more nerdy. On Old Olympus Terraced Tops, A Fin And German Vaulted A Hedge. (or Veiwed Some Hops) : The crainial nerves.

There are eight million versions of this one; the one I learned was On Old Olympus’s Towering Top, A Fat-Assed German Vends Spanish Hops.

I prefer the one “Better Be Right Or Your Great Big Venture Goes West - Get Started Now”
Black Brown Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Violet Grey White Gold Silver None
for numbers 0 - 9, and then the tolerance bands: 5% for Gold, 10% for Silver, and 20% for none.

Although nowadays the tolerance band can be a “regular” digit. Manufacturing has improved to the point that a resistor can be accurate within 1%.

My classmate made up: Eat Apples Daily Guitar Becomes Easy
for the six guitar strings
(I still use that one all the time… can’t seem to remember otherwise.)

I learned “Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle,” which turns nicely into…
“Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles’ Father” for order of flats.

Slick! That’s one to remember.

Other than FACE, did you ever have another mnemonic for the treble spaces?

And have you ever perplexed an adult with
OTTFFSS_?

I have not, but I am going with “E.”

Nothing other than FACE, either…

“E” is right.

The FACE thing makes me think I have run across an acronym or mnemonic that is harder to remember than the thing it’s describing. But, as usual, whatever it is is not coming to me at the moment.

It’s a lot like those things you would associate with the numbers 1-20 or 1-something else where in order to remember a list of things you would take the keyword you associate with the number and then associate the thing you’re trying to remember (grocery list, let’s say) with that keyword and thereby remember your list more easily. There were several proponents of those tricks, some of them appearing on Carson’s show (or the like) and they would dazzle you with their feats of memory.

I just found the list itself (the keywords, that is) harder to remember then the things I was trying to use the keywords for. There were too many tricks like that that I have forgotten along the way.

Like tying a string around your finger. An hour later you see the string and wonder what it was the string was for.

I learned that in electrician school, but it also had “Get Some Now” tacked on the end for gold, silver, no color.

I learned My Very Elegant Mother Just Served Us Nine Pumpkins.

Do Keep Papers Coming Or Flunk General Science. Heard that one in eighth grade, still use it.
