It is a hard call. Although they both star in westerns, the roles they played are very different.

Many of John Wayne’s westerns were directed by John Ford, who had a very heroic vision of the West. On the other hand, Sergio Leone’s vision of the west was gritty and much more brutal.

It is indeed a tough choice, but these two have occupied the top two spots at Your Top 5 All-Time Westerns Stars since it began on 04-21-2015.

Eastwood’s western efforts really only amounted to about 15 films and some TV work. While I enjoyed the Eastwood spaghetti-western films (Dirty Harry on a horse), the only western of his that rose to the level of true excellence was Unforgiven (best director and picture Oscars).

Wayne, on the other hand, made some 84 westerns, with many gems that included The Shootist, True Grit (best actor Oscar), The Searchers, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Red River, Stagecoach, and Liberty Valance. Sheer volume is not the sole metric, of course. Wayne turned in solid and consistent performances. He gets my vote.
