First I had gto look up "pithy", I was never sure exactly what it meant. It has two meanings: heavy and weighty, or soft and spongy. Not helpful. First, by accident, I clicked on Translate, and got Najczystszy in Polish. Equally unhelpful.

OK: The glass is neither half-full nor half-empty -- it is too big.

How to draw:

"Lay down about a thousand pencil lines, ink somewhere in the middle, then erase the pencils."

It's amazing how well this actually works.

Isn't staying in it for 10 years and 2 days also worse?

At some point during my dad's descent into MS-related dementia, he looked at me and said, “Never waste an erection.”

Uncomfortable then, mostly humorous now. Perhaps someday I’ll achieve enlightenment and it will become useful advice.

Another quote from him on the occasion of my 18th birthday, “Remember, you can now be tried as an adult.”

Don't let other people live rent-free in your head.

I've found this quite useful. The irony is that it came from an ex-boss who was a drug-addicted sociopath and screwed over a bunch of people, myself included. It took awhile to get him out of my head, but otherwise, it's proven to be very good advice. At least I got something out of that mess.

Heh. I wrote that in my daughter's birthday card when she turned 18. Four years later, I wrote the same thing in my son's 18th birthday card. He confessed to hoping he'd get that warning (she'd shown him her card). Truthfully, I'd totally forgotten writing it in hers.

Be who you are.

- from a close friend, ca. 1978
- from the chaplain of the college that I'd just been hired at, 1993

Two pithy pieces of advice from fictional characters:

Be true.
- the old man in Stephen R. Donaldson's Thomas Covenant books

Sin is when you treat people as things.
-Granny Weatherwax in one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books

never attribute to malice that which can be fully explained by incompetence (sic. or cowardice).

I always find that helpful when trying to understand bureaucratic decisions.

Interesting. The one which stuck with me was "Quit trying to be what you already are."

Said to me by a mentor who watched me try to act smart, when, if I just participated in the discussion, I would've come off as much smarter.

My grandmother: People who iron sheets and pillowcases need something to do with their time.

A co-worker when I at 21 was trying to decide whether to move off to a place where I had no job, no friends, and no place to live: "Go. Even if you have to come back, you can at least say you went". (I've been here for 34 years now)
