Bands with just three members.

In This thread, Post # 301 by nearwildheaven presented this statement in talking about the band The Police.

Got me thinking. How many notable bands had three main members? That is to say, those named in the band name and presented down front? Many bands use side-people when performing live but those people aren't recognized as full-fledged band members.

And of them, how many got on well for any period of time? I know, two's company and three's a crowd. But hell, when you're superstars I'd think that the power and adulation coming from hundreds of thousands of adoring fans might remove some of that Threesome friction.

Off the top of my head, I've got:

Cream

The Police

Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Crosby, Stills & Nash

None fared well in terms of longevity.

Thoughts? Are three-member bands more troubled/ frictioned than 4 or 5 member bands?

There was a German prog-rock band called Triumvirat that started out with 3 but later expanded to 4.

Off the top of my head, Rush and King's X lasted a long time with the same three members, FWIW.

And then there were three...

Genesis started attaining its greatest success after Peter Gabriel left, leaving the band with three members (Rutherford, Banks and Collins).

You mentioned Cream, Police, EL&P, CSN(and sometimes Y)...

They may not be together now, but many of them had long runs for a rock band (and plenty of albums, concerts, fans, and airplay).

Oh, great, thanks to reading that list out loud I have an earworm: "The Cream Police/they live inside of my head..."

Despite the name, Ben Folds Five only has three members.

Wolfmother began as a trio, went through some lineup changes, and are now once again a trio.

Stray Cats. It was pretty obvious that they were going to stay together as long as Brian Setzer wanted to be in the band.

The Chad Mitchell Trio was together for 55 years, thought not with the same people.

Not well known in North America, but they're one of my favourites, so I'ma mention them, so there. >_>

The Japanese band the brilliant green had 3 members - Tomoko Kawase (vocals), Shunsuke Okuda (rhythm guitar), and Ryo Matsui (lead guitar) - from 1997 until 2010 (partway through recording their 5th album), when Matsui left the band for undisclosed reasons.

Sick Puppies have only three. They're a metal-ish band out of (I believe) Australia. One of them is a chick too.

Cool!

Instead of paying off my college loans, I bought records. Lots and lots of them. I've been flipping through my collection looking for more three-pieces, and there are way more than I would have thought. I'm only up to the end of the "B's", and I should probably stop, or I'll be here all day.

Ben Folds Five was the same way. They were a really tight band for a minute, and managed to put out 3 albums with more than just Ben doing the stuff (still he was doing the bulk of the stuff). But once the band broke up it turns out he didn't need those guys at all. On his first solo album he played all the instruments and it really just sounded like a BFF album.

The Jam,

Weller, Buckler, Foxton

Not sure how well known they are in the states but in the UK they were massive from 1976-82, right up there with such as The Clash.

Medeski, Martin, and Wood

Animal Logic (though they had side support)

Throwing Muses became a trio after Tanya Donnelly left to form Belly

Giles, Giles, and Fripp

Peter, Paul, and Mary

the Kingston Trio

Hot Tuna are usually a duo but occasionally add a third member. They usually include said short-term member as a full member, not a side musician.

It's even more complicated! Reynolds was out of the band before they became successful, but they kept their old name, rather than becoming "Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Dennison."

To be sure, that's a minor distinction, like "Greatest Female Nose Tackle" or "Greatest Japanese Power Forward."

Timbuk3, though they later added a fourth member. At their height they were in the movie DOA with Quaid and Ryan, playing "Too Much Sex, Not Enough Affection" but they're probably best known for "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades."

The Black Eyed Peas up until they added Fergie (who many forget was a member before going solo).
