Leaning Tower of Pisa

Cecil, cecil, cecil... you have completely missed the reason for the leaning tower of Pisa. The valley to the north of Pisa is extremely rich in Marble, which is exported around the world. Without such an ample supply, those saucy Italians would have never erected the tilted phallus.

I've been there.

I took a tour (yes I'm one of those people who sign up for all the day trips and tours), to the tower when I was in the Navy. This was in 1973. It is kind of scary to be around quite frankly. You get the impression that it could come down on you at any moment. I did go in and climb to the top though. The stairs on the inside are actually worn on the down hill sides as you go around. If you are ever in Italy, go there, look at it, and contemplate what happens when you let a contract to the lowest bidder.
