Celebrities Who Look(ed) Significantly Different than Earlier in their Careers

...to the extent that if they were a friend of yours when they were younger, you probably wouldn't be able to recognize them.

Not necessarily those who haven't aged well, and certainly not due to plastic surgery or botox (we've had other threads on that topic).

Example: Steve Earle
1975
Today

I'd say Marlon Brando, but it really was just aging, not caring, and weight gain. I mean, compared to Paul Newman or Robert Redford, Brando looked a lot different.

Michael Jackson?

Philip Michael Thomas

Okay, I know it's been thirty years since he was on Miami Vice. But here's a comparable picture of Don Johnson, who is also 68.

The parts between beard and hat are very clearly the same guy. If they look significantly different to you, it's just the facial-hair version of the Clark Kent effect.

Melissa McCarthy's weight loss has had a significant effect on her appearance. Watching the first season of Mike & Molly, I wouldn't have recognized her based on seeing her in the later seasons, or Ghostbusters.

Not a single woman mentioned thus far, I note (with the possible exception of Caitlyn Jenner). I can't think of many that have changed dramatically over the years for reasons other than plastic surgery.

That said, Renee Zellweger is all over the map looks-wise - some of that is surgery, some of that is exercise and dieting, and some of that is aging.

A recent New York magazine cover featured Bruce Springsteen. He turns 70 this year, and he is not aging well.

Wilmer Valderrama, who played the fey, pixie-ish Fez on That 70s Show, and then hit the gym for a few years to play the hulked-out generic tough guy cop Nick Torres on NCIS.

Jennifer Lopez, on Shades of Blue, is scarcely recognizable as the youngster who played Selena back in the 90s. And Elias Koteas has sure changed from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Chicago Blue.

Cop shows. They change ya.

Frank Langella was heart-throb handsome in Mel Brooks' the Twelve Chairs, and as Dracula onstage in the 1970s and in the 1979 film Dracula adapted from it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracul...er2_poster.jpg

We all get older and grayer, of course, but when Frank Langella shaved his hair real short and started taking rock-hard serious roles it changed him completely. I don't think I've seen him smile in ages

http://deadline.com/2015/04/frank-la...fx-1201415989/

A guy I knew as a grad student followed the same route -- long-haired Bohemian appearance when young, now close-cropped gray hair and no smile.

The point of this thread is people who look significantly difference due to age. We aren't surprised, we're pointing it out.

I don't know about hot, but I think Bruce looks good for being 70. I know I'll look a lot worse when I hit 70.

I have to agree with Renee Zellweger.

I do have suspicions about his hair color.

I have no problem recognizing Diana Rigg, especially when she speaks (although the last thing I saw her in was probably an intro segment for Masterpiece Theater a few years ago). The one I can't recognize is...

Carrie Fisher

Watching her in the last two Star Wars movies, she just doesn't trigger any familiarity at all. I think it's more than just age; her demeanor, the tempo of her voice, just doesn't look like the same person to me.

I'd say he looks pretty good for someone 15-20 years younger. Hell, I'm 42 and I wish I looked that good! Tough crowd, indeed. What kind of septuagenarians do you lot know?

David Vanian Literally did not recognize him last year, even up close, until several songs in. The beard was not a good look for him, but still.

Was gonna go with Iggy Pop or Debbie Harry back before their collagen just up and left them, but they're also in their 70s and they look like it. Vanian is just 61 and aging very well for a punk.

He looks good, and I'd recognize him, but he is finally starting to look somewhat like an old man. A good-looking old man, but still.
