My wife has died.

She was in declining health for several years. About two weeks ago, her blood sugar crashed(she was a diabetic) and yo-yoed up and down for two days. When it stabilized, she was foggy and unwilling to eat or drink. I finally persuaded her to go to the hospital but over the week she was there, she had, essentially, a whole system shutdown.
Yesterday, I honored her wish to not be kept alive by machine.

We had over 37 years of good(with a few rocky patches) times.
I'll miss you, honey.

Oh no, I am so sorry!

My wife and I celebrated 30 years together last year, so I am truly horrified for you.

Thanks, everyone. The past year has been especially rough as her decline accelerated.

Yes, it does. It's like part of your brain holds onto hope even when the rest of your brain knows hope has no place there.

I know I also felt some relief, then guilt at my relief, then anger at my guilt at my relief, etc.

Try to be kind to yourself, forgiving, and patient.

I am so terribly sorry, running coach. You made a gut-wrenching decision but a heroic and honorable one, to fulfill your wife's wishes.

I've seen people lose spouses after both relatively long illnesses and sudden, utterly unexpected deaths--and each comes with their own version of awfulness and shock; people who were blessed with decades and had to relearn life without their partner, and others whose time together was cut cruelly short, leaving a wreckage of unmet plans, promises and dreams. It all sucks.

My heart goes out to you, and everyone who loved your wife. Please be good to yourself and ask if you need anything we can offer. ...Other than virtual hugs, which we already send you.

And the fun begins. I have to cancel/reduce some of our bills. Started with Vivint. Despite explaining the reasons, I got the standard retention pressure. :fuck that noise:
Finally shut her up with "It's been barely ten hours, could you just cancel the service and be done with it?" I guess she got a clue I wasn't going to cave.
Funny thing, she ended the call with "Have a good night." It was 7:30 in the morning here. No accent so no idea where the call center is.

running coach, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a beloved spouse is a unique, awful trauma. You have my sincere condolences.

My best advice (that you didn't ask for): Don't be reticent to turn to the support your communities offer, whether family, friends or online mooks like us. It can really help.

My best to you.

My very deepest sympathy. I lost my husband four (!!) years ago - you have my warmest condolences.

Yeah, that doesn't help much, does it?

Still, I hope you'll stick around to vent or whine or yell however much you want. We're pullin' for you.
