Men's haircut place that had topless women as stylists and had football on TV's

I swear this was an actual thing I saw a news story for and was actually a chain of them, but my google-fu is just showing me random one-off barbershops that have done this in the past but are now defunct.

I distinctly remember NPR running a story about a year or two ago about a new chain barbershop that would have topless women as the hair stylists and would have football on HDTV's on the walls. Now, at some point they may have changed the topless women to women in bikinis but the idea was still the same. It was suppose to be the ultimate "man's man" barbershop and already had dozens of locations in place.

Anyone else remember this?

As I recall, there were a number of places in Japan, where a man could get his hair washed, by a topless woman. I'm really just checking in to see if the O.P. hasn't conflated those sorts of news stories with the NPR story.

I don't know about a topless barber shop, but Portland Maine had a Topless Doughnut Shop about a decade ago

They aren't topless but Sport Clips is a haircutting chain for men. They tend to hire attractive stylists that will also give you a scalp and neck massage. They have TV's with nothing but sports on them and there are many locations. I asked one of the stylists why she worked there and she said it was much easier than working on women's hair and the tips are great.

In the 1980s, I'd pass Studs, or possibly Studz Hairdressing on the way to work. One of my colleagues, who looked like Ron Burgundy went there regularly, because there were skimpy lingerie-clad women hairdressers, football on the TV and you got a beer while you were done. This was in Sydney, Australia.

And for the ladies, did they have naked waiters who could carry a pot of coffee in each hand as well as a half dozen donuts?

Closest thing we have is Jude's, where the stylists don't wear anything special (usually just jeans and t shirt) but they do have a television at each chair with sports programming and the walls are all decorated with male-oriented stuff (a few pinups, sports, rock stars).

Sounds like Sports Clips, they claim to have locations in all 50 states.

There's a coffee place here in town, not much more than a drive-up kiosk really, staffed by hot girls in bikinis. It's called "Ooo La Lattes".

Those are certainly the nicest carry out cups I have seen.

There used to be a very similar one in my home town, called "Perky Cups."

In the 80s I was at a place in Pittsburgh that was awkward as hell. No nudity, but the woman who washed my hair stood on the left side and washed the right half of my head, then switched sides and washed the other half of my head. I could barely breath. She worked for tips.

There was also a woman who gave hand/arm massages while you got your haircut, and an elderly black man with a shoeshine box. I never returned.

There was such a "hair cutting" establishment in either E. Northport or Commack, NY in the 1990's but it got shut down quickly. I think they used a zoning violation as the reason.

Not haircuts, but MLB baseball and topless dancers: Iíve gone to 29 of the 30 MLB team ballparks (only missing ATL), and in my travels Iíve seen one and only one ballpark with topless dancers. Okay, pasties, but otherwise topless. I could not believe my eyes.

At Miamiís Marlins Park in left field is a bar called the Clevelander. Thereís a cover charge, which I paid in order to sit at the seats right on the warning track ó only a chain link fence separates you from the left fielder, a very cool place to sit! But to get there I had to walk past topless dancers at the bar. It was a tough journey but I made it.

I could not believe they had topless dancers inside an MLB ballpark!

When I get my hair cut, I tend to zone out, even to nod off. I rarely converse with male OR female barbers.

SO, even if my hair was being cut by a gorgeous nude supermodel, I'd never NOTICE her! Why pay extra for things I'm not even looking at?

There were topless lady barbers in Birmingham England around the 90s I think.
They did not last long, I suspect they were closed by officialdom.

Never tried them, but I suspect that hairdressing ability was lower importance than bust size on the job description.

I don't mean to suggest that attractive women can't also be skilled, competent professionals, but any place hiring stylists who also have to be pretty is going to have a smaller pool of talent to draw from. When I get my hair cut, my first criterion in selecting someone, and by a wide margin, is "are they good at cutting hair".

It's distressing how far the bar for male culture has been lowered. When I think of the ultimate "man's man" barbershop there's mahogany paneling on the walls, hot shaving cream applied with a brush, and your choice of sandalwood or bergamot colognes.

The place I get my hair cut is none of these things. They're a friendly shop; talkative even when I'm not. Been going to the same woman for about ten years. Sometimes I take them a batch of cookies when I go in.

Toronto has a hotel that overlooks the field in the outfield. At least once they had to tell a couple to close the curtains due to them having too much naked fun.

I couldn't help but notice that one of the coffee places mentioned above is prominently advertising for staff. (Ok, I looked).

Clearly, even the pool for counter staff is pretty small when restricted to those who are willing to work half-dressed.

In Korea, barbershops with two poles offer far more than a haircut in the back. Same for some coffee delivery services.

Well, at least here in CA, getting a cosmetologist license is not a license to make money. In fact, often they have to pay the business, ie "rent a station." So, plenty of job seekers, few jobs.

Men tip more and are easier to please. Of course you do have the risk of getting hit on.

That is indeed, my barbershop.

I passed by a Lady Jane's in the St. Louis area not long ago. Apparently they have locations in a lot of states. I also figured it was sort of Hooters with haircuts.

https://www.ladyjanes.com/ (homepage is SFW)

I want to say I saw another place in the area that advertised attractive-but-clothed stylists, but I can't recall now.

Lady Jane's, huh?

The first thing I think of when I hear the name is Lady Jane Grey. She was Queen of England for Nine days in 1553, between Edward VI and Mary Tudor. I wrote a play about her once. She was also the subject of a movie starring Helena Bonham Carter, Captain Picard and a pre-Princess Bride Cary Elwes. Lady Jane was packed off the prison by Mary Tudor, but when her followers revolted and caused a lot of trouble, Mary thought it was prudent to nip any more possible coups in the bud, and had her beheaded.

Helluvan icon for a barber shop.

Why is a person's love of boobs assumed to be inextricably linked to that person's love of sports TV?

But what do I know? My idea of a good haircut is a "Numero Seis" while making a hand motion around my head, the last time without noticing the barberess was an Angla. "You mean a Number Six all around?"

"Si, er, yes." And she, like everybody else, still insisted on taking her time, styling it, FFS. It was nice--as a higher primate I enjoy getting groomed--but needlessly complex.

I will bet you that there's a pretty high correlation, even if there are some breast aficionados who aren't sports fans, and vice-versa. There's a reason why big-screen TVs showing sports are a staple in "breastaurants."

Well, it's not like a business has to do just one thing. If a restaurant offers food, and beer, and sports, and attractive waitresses it gives them a way to distinguish themselves from the places that just have food, beer, and sports.

Maybe Borders books would still be around if they'd found a way to spice things up a bit.

How long is the average man in a barber shop, anyway? Not very long! Even if the barber is a gorgeous nude female, you're not going to see much, and you're not going to see it for long.

Besides, in this day and age, when ANY kind of porn is available in seconds, what's the attraction?

You'd see plenty in the mirror in the +/-5 minutes a simple haircut takes, and a porn video doesn't run its fingers through your hair or press its boobs into your side as it leans in.

You can't see how this still might be more fun than a "regular" haircut?

In Austin, there was a place for a few years called Sexy Scissors on North Lamar. Maybe this is what you meant?

https://www.yelp.com/biz/sexy-scisso...aircuts-austin

The topless part lasted about 2 months before the health department stepped in. Then they went with bikini clad stylists. It limped on for about three years.

Cool sign, though:

I guess there's some cultural differences between Sydney and the U.S. Here in the U.S., if I saw a sign for 'Studz Hairdressing' I would not expect to find any women at all in there.

Totally serious question: what's unhealthy about exposed breasts? Food isn't generally served in barbershops and I could understand concern for hair in food. If stylists were wearing asslesschaps, well, maybe I could see health concerns with regard to hepatitis maybe. But where's the health issue in a barbershop? Even if the stylist has a hairy chest, there's bits of hair falling constantly due to the nature of the enterprise.

Wouldn't the girls boobs get all itchy from all the hair clippings getting on them? Also, isn't that thought kind of gross, getting other people's hair on your exposed breasts?

Well, nothing like having to explain a joke to make it unfunny. I would in fact expect to find women (as employees, anyway) in "The Tasty Titties Gentlemen's Club". But I wouldn't expect too many in "Frank and Larry's Greenwich Village Leather Bar" (where there may be topless servers, but hairy-chested or shaved-chested ones)

And - maybe I've been too much in East Coast US urban neighborhoods -- "Studs" or "Studz" just to me sounds more like the second than the first. Which was kind of funny for a second there, to me, since I'm sure that's not the impression they're trying for.

A gentleman would offer to brush them off.

Even if the stylist has a hairy chest, there's bits of hair falling constantly due to the nature of the enterprise.

I'm guessing someone may have had an open sore or skin disease that would have been covered by a top.

Not real sure. Think because they served beer, they had to serve food. If you serve food, health department has lots of rules. I believe it was a case of "we could do it, but we'd have to have more employees on a shift than we'd cover with revenue".

Frankly the idea of handling sharp scissors with no top on gives me the willies.

To be fair, there's considerable debate as to whether the Marlins are an actual MLB team or not.
