I gave my credit card to my "best friend"

So my neighbor "best friend" texts me and asks me for money. I said I had none, they said it was an emergency and asked if I had a card. I hesitated for a moment but said "yes".

After an hour and a half of talking about it. I was convinced they were "trust worthy" enough. They promised only to take 5-10 dollars. They returned the card 10 minutes later and took out 60 dollars. I wasn't over drafted but I was so incredibly mad.

Told my family, got a lecture, lay downed depressed for 7 hours straight. We all decided to drop it and just learn our lesson.

Did you actually have cash on you at the time that you could have loaned them instead of the card? If so, And what kind of best friend has to argue for 90min to convince their best friend for five dollars in an emergency? How old are you? And what did this person say upon returning the card, knowing they had withdrawn more than promised? Are you planning on getting the $60 back?

Just think: they will _never_ be able to ask you for _anything_. No gas for the lawnmower, no milk money, no any money for any reason nor physical help of any kind (no moving, no putting up a fence (unless you want that fence) nor snow blowing or chopping up a windblown tree).

Which means for the low, low price of $60 and a few hours to realize you are FREE!! Never to have to help them again. Ever.

I didn't have cash at the time of them borrowing it. They have borrowed money in the past (but it was cash). I am 29 and they were 22; they didn't say much after returning the card. There is no way I am getting that 60$ they couldn't pay me the last 20$ I loaned them.

What would worry me the most is that he could have written down your CC information from the card and now can use it for online purchases whenever he wants.

Nah, I canceled the card and getting a new one in the mail. Canceled it like right away so they cannot do anything with that information.

I wouldn't lie if I said I wasn't bewitched by her good looks.

Did she give you any indication of what the nature of her "emergency" was? And why did you refer to her as your best friend? Even using scare quotes?

If there is a next time, withdrawn the cash for her. Or purchase what she needs for her. Or just tell her no.

No, no, no. Continue to show her you are they for her when she really needs help. If you keep showing her what a nice guy you are and how different you are from all those assholes who just have one thing on their minds, if you keep doing it for long enough, sooner or later the girl is yours. That's how it works. Buy her stuff. Listen to her complain about guys. Comfort her.

Probably what she spent it on, wouldn't be surprised. I am not quiet sure how she will look at me again, especially since she is just across the street from me.

Something like what? Be more specific, I'm getting old.

ETA: oh do you mean the whole "ethiopian new year"and leo bloom and his dog swallowing a bone, etc? That was genuinely not snark.

She'll look at you as a walking ATM. You're enchanted by her looks and can't refuse a request for money and she knows this now.

Prolly the same way she looked at you before this latest unfortunate occurrence, sans any trace of doubt. Best advice: pretend she doesn't exist. Don't go out of your way to interact with her, don't nurse any hopes of getting with her, be polite but curt if she happens to see you around. IOW, fuhgeddaboudit.

Well I hashed it out with the mods and I am A-OK. I was thoughtless but all I meant in that post was to question him as to what New Year it could possibly be in middish Sept. Period. Given the nature of the thread, it probably would have been wiser to wait until a few other posters had chimed in before I posted my questioning post. But alas, hindsight is 20/20.

And how are you anyway? I'm 38. I think im feeling old because I found my first bald spot!

After an hour and a half of persuasion, you handed your credit card to a neighbour who have previously borrowed money from you and not repaid it?

Because you liked her looks?

You deserved the lecture, dude. Which left you lying down depressed for 7 hrs?

And ‘WE decided...’, really? WE ? Way to shift your ownership in this.

Seriously?

Now I’m curious just how old/young you are too.

I had that happen to me once. A neighbor said she was desperate, and I gave her $20. Thought I might at least get a date out of it, but after that, she was always "busy." I consider it a lesson learned.

Rub it in, dick. I started to go grey at 18 and I comforted myself by telling myself that my incredibly thick bushy hair, while greying, would never start falling out. Now I just stare at my head and weep. Weep for what is lost. And for losses yet to come. So now I'm 38 and balding on top with white all around the temples. Good thing I got this wheelchair to hide myself in. Otherwise I might become self-conscious.

If this comes up, use Western Union to wire her the money. There's a fee, but no one can hit you for more.

The plot thickens. Information that could have been included in the first post is now leaking out little by little.

And I think you mean, "I would be lying if I said I wasn't bewitched by her good looks."

I can't believe she had the nerve to ask you about a credit card when you told her you didn't have the cash. "I need to borrow money, so I expect you to borrow it to give to me." That was the red flag right there.

Seminal advice columnist Ann Landers used to say, "Nobody can take advantage of you without your permission." Please don't give her permission anymore. Cancelling the credit card was a smart move.

Education isn't free, T-minus. Some dudes end up buying cars and shit, sometimes getting married, having their seed turned into hateful demons, and then getting horribly divorced, before they work out what a predator looks like, so $80 is actually a bargain.

But you can turn this around. Any time you see her in the company of friends, yell to her, "Hey! Where's my money!" Here's a few good examples of how to phrase it if you need help moving a conversation to the needful topic

Hey now! Us legit MM patients do not appreciate your use of scare quotes!! And by "legit", I mean able to pony up the $60 fee to be "evaluated" by the in-house dispensary Dr. who determined that yes, we needed a "prescription" for weed.

When men get taken in by the bewitching good looks of a deceitful woman, $60 is near the extreme low end of the scale of costs.

If you manage to learn the obvious lesson* from this, consider yourself lucky.

I'm willing to bet this woman has dozens of "best friends" that she "borrows" money from.

I'll just go ahead an tell you right now, straight up: she's not going to fuck you, unless you win the lottery or something.

ETA: granted, she's already fucked you, but not in the way you were hoping for.

I grow weary of this brand of male lamenting. If you wooed your woman with diamonds or cars, stop acting surprised to learn ‘She’s all about money!’ She’s not much of an apex predator if you’re going so willingly to the slaughter, in my opinion.

Valid point about $60 being a bargain for this particular life lesson, though.

OP, you're not the first guy to be swindled by a pretty girl and you won't be the last. You want to be nice, you want her to like you, but she's poison.

Next time she tries to hit you up, give her the wall of silence. No matter what kind of sob story she gives you, walk away. There's plenty other fish in the sea and you don't need that soul-sucking harpy making you depressed. Consider this an $80 life lesson learned and move on.

Now, now. The lion, great white, and grizzily bear are not above dining on the carrion. Even the best will happily take the easy pickings. Besides, she ain't no apex predator if she's limiting herself to $20 & $60 scams, she's more of a parasitic nymph predator at this point. Once she's gorged herself on pocket money, however, she will move on to more physical investments which cost her nothing but command a greater portion of her victims' minds.

"If you wooed your woman with diamonds or cars, stop acting surprised to learn ‘She’s all about money!’"
Personally I've always been a champion of the "I ain't got shit" school of woo. Filters out the overly ambitious (plus it gets you a few free meals) during the courting process.

How did she actually get the money? Was this a credit card and she did a cash advance? Or a debit card and she pulled it from your bank account?

A bit of practical advice if you have a genuine case of helping out a friend in an emergency rather than (as appears to be the case here) getting played for a sucker: see if your credit card issuer has a setup for generating a separate CC number with a duration and credit limit you can set. I used that arrangement once for someone I trust (to be honest and pay me back, which she's been doing) but don't entirely trust (to not get scatterbrained and let somebody else get hold of the card number).
