10 Best Movie Dance Sequences Ever

There’s a couple of copies at half.com.

It’s been years since I have watched it, but The Turning Point had some truly beautiful ballet.

Robert Altman’s Company had wonderful dancing throughout. I’ve only seen it once, so I can’t pick out a particular number.

BTW, in case anyone reading this thread had been unaware of it, we’ve got a Musical Lovers’ group going here. Believe it or not, some members of the group think that singing is more important than dancing in musicals – :dubious:

*Steam Heat * from the **Pajama Game ** is really quite impressive.

And from **All That Jazz ** my personal favorite is the *Air Erotica * number and then then the *Bye Bye Life * spectacular at the end.

I know I’ll be stoned for this but the *Who Will Buy * sequence from Oliver! is really amazing. If you watch the edits carefully you will see some amazing matching in this and in the “Consider Yourself” number. Hundreds of dancers perfectly coordinated is quite amazing.

OH and what about

Saturday Night Fever. When Travolta cleared the dance floor and did that dance in that suit he made himself a star and made one of the iconic movie dance scenes.
Perhaps we should divide the list into ‘solo dance’, ‘couple dance’, and ‘group dance’, and ‘frickin hugh production number’? Each reqire different skills for both the dancers and the film makers. The way a huge production is shot and edited is different than what is needed for a solo dance.

I’d nominate two from Carousel – June is Bustin’ Out All Over and the Carousel Ballet at the end. And I’d second Shall We Dance from The King and I – have to rewind and rewatch every time I see it!

Pretty much one image from that movie has stayed with me ever since I saw it — Baryshnikov does this…thing…where he leaps about 6 feet in the air and hovers for, oh, 5 seconds. Jaw-dropping. Michael Jordan-esque.

Googled and found a vendor at amazon, after all, and ordered it.

Thanks again!!

Would anyone care to recommend a starter set of ballets on DVD?

No list of “Best Dance Sequences” that doesn’t have Fred Astaire and the hat rack in Royal Wedding at number one is invalid on the face of it. The firecracker dance in Holiday Inn is second. The Nicholas Brothers’ number, already mentioned, is top ten material as well, and pretty much anything from West Side Story.

The closing number in Flashdance gets honorable mention. Everything else is debatable.

Shodan

I won’t hit you, I thought of this, too. You might already know it, but the dvd has footage of the part of the scarecrow dance that was cut.

I have also always loved Gene Kelly’s newspaper dance in Summer Stock (1950), don’t care for the film, but will sit through it to see this part.

I’d like to see a portrayal of Tom Lehrer’s Masochism Tango. :stuck_out_tongue:

No mention of Time Warp?
