So, after hearing all the hype and hoo-hah I broke down and saw 8 Mile last night. As my girlfriend and I were leaving the theatre we were both compelled to ask each other: “Did we just see the same movie that everyone else did?” We had both heard how this was a new and refreshing take on an old story, how Eminem was an amazing natural actor, etc. Even the girl that sold us our tickets felt the need to tell us “you’re really going to love this movie, I’ve seen it twice already!” What I saw when I sat down was a boring, way too long movie with a soulless script and actors that, every once in awhile, shone all the way into mediocreness. Eminem was an expressionless puppet on screen who had NO chemistry with Britney Murphy (their sex scene was so forced it almost made me uncomfortable.) Kim Bassinger was worse. Her accent was extradinarily bad and didn’t fit with the story (why did a woman from Detroit have a southern accent? If they were southern imports then why didn’t Rabbit have the same accent?) As far as the story goes, well, I think I’ve seen episodes of _Ghost Writer_ with deeper and more original stories. It basically goes like this: Guy has conflict with other guys. Guy overcomes conflict. I hope no one pulled any muscles working on this beast. So what’s the big deal here? Why is everyone praising this movie to high heaven? I’ll admit, I don’t particularly like Eminem (his albums are a bit too juvenile but I really like some of the stuff he’s done on the Sway and King Tech albums), but I went into this movie with a completely open mind. I just simply could not force myself to like this steaming pile of teen drama crap. ---

Well, I agree, but the truth be told, I’m not the target audience. I think it is crap, but no worse crap than the stuff I watched in the 80s. Well, it is worse to me, but I’ve already said I’m not the target audience. ---

I went to see punch drunk love this weekend and the lines for the theater were out the door. When we got our tickets and into the movie, we found a completly abandoned theater and hordes of college/hs kids charging down to see jackass or 8-mile. What has this world come to? ---

Wow, I just realized that **JuanitaTech** corrected my butchering of “mediocre” in the first response to this thread. I guess I thought I wrote mediocrity and she was referring to the mediocrity of Ghost Writer. Can we _please_ get back to the OP now? 😃 ---

I agree. It sucked. Didn’t live up to the hype. Somehow, backwardsly, I saw an Eminem movie that was worse than I expected. Something is wrong with that picture. ---

Yeah, it wasn’t great… and I am the targeted demo, 20/M. Where was the resolution with Brittany Murphy’s character? Eminem failed to drop the hard rapper schtick, so there was no tenderness with his daughter, most noticably. And what was the point of the mother and girlfriend angles, anyway? Neither of them really had an impact on the storyline, save for Rabbit getting the car and him, for some reason, being inspired to perform in the final battle. On a related note, I will forever refer to a friend of mine as “Cheddar” from now on. And no, my friend didn’t blank himself in the blank. ---

Never was a big fan of Ememim, but after this movie I like him more than in the past. The character development was great. Chedder Bob-classic! as for Britney Murphys character (the girlfriend) I didn’t care much for her because she didn’t add much to the movie except for some support for Rabbit. Otherwise she could have been anybody with blonde hair and big red lips. I did enjoy that nifty sex scene, tho’!!
