You do a coupla courses of Dianabol and see how close to One. Thousand. Pounds. you can come. Steroids? Probably. Combined with monstrous innate strength and grueling training regimens. Not to mention Zeus-like willpower, patience and dedication.

Thanks, **ultrafilter** , for posting this. My son is away at boot camp and I’m always on the lookout for articles he’d be interested in to enclose in my letters to him.

You wouldn’t think a scrawny old gal like me would be interested in this stuff, but I kind of got used to hearing about it when Nick was home and I’ve missed his updates since he’s been gone. Nick was mostly into the bodybuilding end of things, but he’s interested in powerlifting and has been flirting with switching over once he’s out of boot and able to train again.

I’m interested in the lifting shirts – Nick has never tried one and he actually prefers to lift in looser shirts – he says he finds them more comfortable. You say the bench record without a shirt is 713 lbs? Has the guy who did that lift ever tried it with a shirt to see what kind of difference he’d see? And if Rychlak put up 1005 _with_ a shirt, is there any record of what he puts up without one?

It looked like when he finished, he kept his hands on the bar while the other guys unwrapped his wrists.

any insight on that **ultrafilter**.

I didn’t have the sound. Can anyone recap his speech at the end. Was it a sales pitch? A boast? A challenge?

Well, I’m certainly not _denying_ any of these things.

Do any of the DoperGals (or DoperGuys, if your tastes run that way) find this kind of physique attractive? 'Cause I pretty much think “ew.” Then again, I like my men like my wine - tall and bubbly with fruity undertones and a nice long finish.

Still…dayum!

Not so much. I think, frankly, he looks kind of fat and oddly built (those short arms!). I have a better appreciation for weightlifters in general than I did before my son got into it, but I still don’t care for the real ripped bodybuilder physique much either. Nick never competed and so never got down to the super-low bodyfat that is typical with those cellophane-skin looking photos – thank goodness!. Nick is naturally lean (around 8 - 10% badyfat typically) but he likes the heftier look a lot of powerlifters have. I agree with him, I think a big strong-looking man is attractive. [This guy](http://www.mcshane-enterprises.com/ASL/images/Coan/coan2.jpg) for example, I think has a nice physique – he looks strong and masculine.

He said something about Rychlak 3:16 where he lifts a grand. Kind of a boast, kind of incoherent.

And plenty LOUD. If you’re at work, turn it waaaay down first. I just startled a coworker walking down the hall.

He said “We got a new [something] today. It’s called Rychlak 3:16 - I JUST BENCHED A GRAND!”

Undoubtedly the guy is super strong and determined and lifting 700 something pounds on your own is freaking amazing.

But it still bothers me that he set the record with the shirt. I mean, whoever set the previous record could have been just as good an athlete, but didn’t have the shirt. How can we compare the two and say one is better than the other when the variables are not similar? Like being the only speed swimmer with one of those friction-reducing suits.

I’m new to this topic and I’m sure there’s already lots of debate. Could anyone point me in the direction of some thoughtful dialogue?

thanks

I believe the missing word is “chapter.” A Stone Cold Steve Austin reference for non-wrestling fans.

As for finding him attractive: looking like he does, there’s not much else he could really do with his life.
