**Jeff** would you call it coercion when a group of kids surrounds another kid urging them to throw that water balloon at the principal??? I would agree to the term “peer pressure” which, to me, doesn’t bring it up to the level of ‘coercion’. I recall being a child and going along w/the crowd, even when I sorta had some level of feeling like “if mom finds out I’ll get in trouble”, but **not** to the point of doing something that I felt I was really bad (like throw a brick at the principal for example). ---

When I was 13, it seemed that while every boy had nothing but sex on his mind, the girls were more discerning. There was always that one girl who had a reputation for being ‘easy’, but for the most part girls kept the sex talk to themselves. We boys were so immature about it that we really didn’t get anywhere anyway. I remember boys bragging about having sex when they were 12 or 13 and giving all sorts of imaginary details, but looking back, I realize they did not know a single thing about sex - with another person. One thing that shocked me when I became an eigth grade teacher is it seems to be the other way around now. Girls really aren’t the least bit reserved about expressing themselves. I once had a 13 year old student who was often late or absent, and didn’t turn too much work in. I called her into my room, but before hand I told the lady who taught next door to keep an ear open out in the hall in case the girl threw a fit when I told her I was going to call her mother over after school. After she came in and sat down, and I told her why she was in trouble, she just looked at me, and said “how about I suck your cock clean tonight and we forget all about it?”. I was damn lucky that Mrs. \_\_\_ from next door swooped in and dragged her to the office immediately. Not that I was tempted, but there is nothing worse than an accusation where it is only my word against a student’s word. No sane male teacher will ever be alone with a student these days for a second. ---

Isabelle- You’ve had first hand experience of what witholding the facts does. Sit down with your son and arm him with facts. Nobody is suggesting you explain all the pictures in the Kama Sutra. But chances are he’s been exposed to all kinds of myths. A surprising number of teens still believe that pregnancy can be prevented by having sex standing up, or by douching with coca cola. Sit him down and tell him the truth about pregnancy and STDs. Explain to him that sex has all kinds of emotional baggage and that it changes things. Two things are vital. Make it clear that if he needs to talk or has questions, he can come to you. Secondly, tell him the truth. If he feels that you’re lying or exaggerating the risks, he’ll ignore you. EG Marijuana has risks and smoking the stuff can cause all the same health problems as cigarettes. Instead of focusing on that true information, a lot of school programs teach that a few joints can kill you, make you a vegetable, or render you sterile. After finding out that this isn’t true, a lot of kids assume that the things they were told about other drugs were also lies. They then move on to drugs that are really dangerous. ---

I didn’t know what oral sex was at 13, not really. I’d hear the word “blow job” and I’d picture someone blowing on a dick and wonder what was so great about that. And I was **far** from sheltered. The parents of these kids need a beat down, bigtime, and so do the kids themselves. Thirteen is young but not too young to expect someone to act decent, sheesh. ---

Is my memory faulty, or did the OP say there was at least one teacher on the bus when this incident occurred? What was that teacher doing? Aren’t you supposed to look around the bus every so often, just to see if some of the poor dears are doing something untoward? Was there a distraction elsewhere? Pretty birdies? A KrispyKreme store? Interview that teacher pronto. This apparent dereliction of duty is appalling. And mom should get some kind of counseling, if only to improve her sense of the absurd, if that’s possible. ---

Oral and traditional sex were being practiced by 13 yr. olds back then too. I don’t remember anybody gettin’ it on in a school bus, but in my Jr. high school (grades 7 through 9) peer group, anybody that hadn’t “done it” before the ninth grade was considered pretty much of a square. 🆒 John. SOP for field trips, at least when I was in school. ---
