I think “143 = I love you” predates beepers considerably. I have a great-aunt in her 90s who used to exchange 143s with her husband, and continues today with her children and grandchildren. WAG: Maybe it originates in saving money on telegrams? ---

There is some lighthouse on the US East coast whose light pattern is 1-4-3. The coast Guard was going to shut it down to save $. There was a huge protest against killing the “I love you” lightouse. Most of the protesters were over 50. The CG relented. A guy is sent to prison, and his first day there, he hears a prisoner shout out “56”, and the other inmates laugh hysterically. He asks his cell mate what’s going on, and the cell mate says to him, “We’ve all been here for a long time and know all of each other’s jokes. So to save time, we’ve numbered all the jokes, and when somebody wants to tell a joke, he just shouts out the number.” So the guy decides to try it, and he shouts out “56”, and there’s absolute silence. He asks his cell mate, “What’s wrong? The other guy said 56, and everybody loved it, but I did it and didn’t get a response.” So the cell mate says, “It’s not the joke you told. But, man, the way you told it…” ---
