Going back to the late 1940s Martha White flour sponsored _The Grand Ole Opry_ radio program. And I’m pretty sure Garrison Keillor’s “Powdermilk Biscuits” jingle was meant to be an homage to Martha White’s jingle.

> Not only was Kovacs a gambler, he didn’t like taxes and pretty much refused to pay them. Between the taxes and the gambling, he had run up substantial debts when he died. Edie Adams refused to declare bankruptcy and refused offers of help from Kovacs’ friends, insisting she’d pay off the debts herself. Along with advertising cigars, she put together a nightclub act, returned to acting, and started her own cosmetics company. Eventually, she not only paid off all the debts but became wealthy on her own.

That reminds me, how come cigars were exempted from the 1971 cigarette commercial ban? You don’t see them now but I remember seeing cigar commercials on TV for years after that.

When Pebbles was added to the Flintstones, Hanna-Barbera dropped Winston as a sponsor in favor of more family-friendly products (e.g., Welch’s Grape Juice and Styrofoam Building Blocks). It also proved to be a doubly wise move on their part due to the increasing concern about the negative health effects of smoking which culminated in the Surgeon General’s report in 1964.

Probably because you don’t inhale cigar smoke the way you do cigarette smoke, so they weren’t considered as great a health risk. Also, teenagers wouldn’t be drawn to them they way they’re drawn to cigarettes.

I’ve had a “thing” for Edie Adams ever since I saw her in _ **It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World** _ in 1963. I was a very, uhm, precocious eight-year-old. :o

> Curious. I’ve seen Nord VPN being done by the presenter on a couple YouTube channels and none of them made any claims about _credit card_ security. At least one of them specifically mentioned being able to watch [program] on Netflix by changing your ‘location’ from the US to somewhere in Europe because Netflix carries it there.

[Here’s a whole video Not About NordVPN which takes apart claims made by VPN ads and it rings true with things I have seen.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVDQEoe6ZWY)

[The UK’s advertising regulators agree with me](https://www.pcmag.com/news/nordvpn-ad-banned-for-exaggerating-threat-of-public-wi-fi):

> [@](#):
>
> The UK’s Advertising Standards Agency has banned a NordVPN commercial for misleading viewers about the privacy risks of using a public Wi-Fi network without also having a VPN.
>
> In NordVPN’s ad, a man is walking down a train cubicle giving his credit card details, passwords, and photographs to strangers on the train with a voiceover saying that the man is a “hackers’ best friend.”
>
> The voiceover continues to say that “your sensitive online data is just as open to snoopers on public Wi-Fi,” before showing the man using the NordVPN app to protect his data. According to a post by the ASA, nine people complained to the agency about the suggestion that using public Wi-Fi without a VPN was so vulnerable it was akin to openly telling strangers your passwords and personal information.

NordVPN claims that HTTPS doesn’t mean the site is legitimate, which is technically false in one sense, somewhat true in perhaps a broader sense, and, again, not something a VPN can help you with.

It also doesn’t really respond to the specific concern the ASA had.

> A lot of channels are getting organic sponsors because YouTube pretty well started screwing them over in regards to revenue-sharing. If you look up stuff about February last year you’ll find channel after channel complaining about it. There was a big push to get Patreon accounts at the time as well.

Indeed.

Was that the standard opening for all the shows? I had heard that the heart-on-satin background for the opening credits that most of us are familiar with was not the original opening, and was developed specifically for syndication reruns because of the sponsor-oriented original opening. I believe Phillip Morris was their major sponsor, though not the exclusive one. There was one show that was actually cut short so that Lucy and Desi (as Ricky Ricardo) could demonstrate the wonders of a new Ford hardtop convertible where the solid roof folded down into the trunk at the touch of a button, causing both of them to feign amazement at this modern magic!

ETA: Posted that before I saw the above post, #29

Added info, per Wikipedia

“The show’s original opening and commercial bumpers were animated caricatures of Lucy and Desi. They were designed and animated by MGM character designer and future “Flintstones” cartoonist, Gene Hazelton (1917–2005) and were produced secretly under a contract producer William Hanna had secured privately. The program sponsor, Phillip Morris cigarettes was incorporated into many of these sequences, so whenI Love Lucywent into repeats, they were replaced by the now familiar heart logo”
