You guys are harshing my mellow, man.
That car and van came from Ford already fully tricked out like that.
I recently watched a YouTube video where a guy found and refurbished one of each of those vehicles specifically in order to recreate that photo (Some folks have too much time and money on their hands).
One thing he discovered was that those were pre-production models, and Ford had to simplify their paint scheme for the production models, probably to keep cost down. He had his paint guy redo his van to look just like the photo, for the cool factor.
I remember as a child when my family went to a Ford dealer and my brother and I got all excited about that same cruiser van. We were tweens and didn’t know what vans were for, just that they looked cool. We played around inside. That particular cruiser van is my only memory of ever having been in a 70’s-style conversion van.
(by the way, that image is the same as Link #1 from the OP).
Just fyi, the YouTube of the guy who restored the van and recreated the van & Pinto ad was most likely the one by ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. While he has a nice size car collection, his is a touch…eclectic.
While I dig on the shaggin wagons of the 70’s, I was always more of a VW van/camper fan. Definitely a different, but related, scene.
A coworker has a former prison van. I told her she should get it airbrushed. My idea has been ignored.
Eleven long-haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse Microbus?
I wonder how many people got that reference, and how many read the post in question with the voice in question, before your post. I don’t want to be alone with you here. ![]()
I got my nuts from a hippie in a camper van Saturday night
I was a little kid in the 70s and thought those things were the best. I’d be lying if I said I don’t think they’re cool anymore. I think I’d love to have one for about a week. Then I’d realize I no longer had the libido and sensibilities of a 13 year old anymore, and I’d get all depressed.

I so want one of those to take on long trips. They were really comfortable. But nowadays they are “mini van” style with set rows and no personality.
That was from the movie “Supervan” which was filmed here in the Kansas City area. I remember when it came out they had all these local promotions and things.
Forget the 50’s. the 70’s ruled! The best cars, tv, music, and culture.
While I liked those vans they really were not practical in the sense of they were hard to park, bad on gas - basically not something you could drive to work and around town everyday. Plus they rusted out bad.
I guess eventually all that shaggin lead to lots of kids then they were replaced with practical cars.
Fun while it lasted though.
Crazy memory from back then (late 70s), I had a friend that moved to Michigan and really got into the customized van scene. I went up to visit him over a weekend and he says "Hey man, we’re going to a “van-in”. Sounded OK to me. It was somewhere in Indiana (near Monticello, IN maybe?) I think it was a couple hour drive from Sturgis Michigan. It was one of the wildest events I ever attended. Hundreds of vans with all the usual murals and shag carpet. Copious amounts of alcohol, weed and nudity. Craziest van I remember was a 60s era Chevy dragster hot rod van. Stripped out interior with roll cage, huge V8 hot rod motor, narrowed/tubbed rear end with gigantic tires in the rear and a straight front axle with skinny little tires in front. No drag strip handy but he did some nice burnouts in a parking lot.
Wish I would have taken a camera.
I grew up around old vans and every vacation when I was a kid in the 70s was taken in our 69 Econoline. There was lots of camping and lots of other vans to look at and appreciate. Those days made quite an impression - I love the old vans, and in fact own a 1974 Ford Econoline to this very day. We have it set up for camping and road trips and enjoy it quite a lot. It isn’t a daily driver though by any stretch - hard on gas and unwieldy in parking lots. Plus it’s a classic vintage vehicle now and I don’t want to risk it while doing something mundane like getting groceries.
Does anyone sell vans these days or is it all minivans and delivery trucks?
I think you would have to buy a commercial van and modify it. They sell vans for families but they have lots of windows and are like big station wagons. Chevy makes what they call Conversion Vans.
You can watch Vannin’, a documentary about the custom van culture then and now, on amazon prime:
I watched that. Very interesting.
