It was a track that resonated with people all over the globe and played on radio regularly for several years. Not a bad legacy. Haters gonna hate, but it’s still a technically great song.
Same here. I came of age (turned 21) in the Disco era, apparently to my ever-lasting shame. Still, I had a lot of fun doing the Hustle, et al, at the time.
OMG, the Hustle! A bunch of us girls would practice our disco-line dance steps in the locker area during lunch! Somebody always had a radio and would turn up the volume so loud that the music would float upstairs to the main hallway…the minute we’d hear the door bang and the footsteps descending we’d either scatter or perform, depending on who was checking up on us.
Wow, I haven’t thought about that in ages…
Ditto “Year Of The Cat”. Haven’t heard that in ages either.
Baker Street was the tune the guy in the stereo store used to demo speakers when I had some money burning a hole in my pocket. I have to admit - cranked up on some good speakers it was pretty awesome.
Boogie Nights does a great job of recreating this era…at least in southern California.
She used to do The Pony
She used to do The Stroll
I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll!
makes me smile – it’s before your time but a dear friend loves to recreate her days doing these dances.
Nick Lowe…who was a great songwriter
I bought a vinyl copy of City to City several weeks ago and absolutely love listening to it on our basement set-in-the-ceiling four-speaker setup. It’s a great, great album from beginning to end.
I feel like Baker Street was one of those iconic songs of my young adulthood. Whenever I hear the first few strains of that song it takes me back and it’s one of my favorites. Although there were many songs I liked during that time only a few actually make me feel like I’m back there again when I hear them. Another is Dire Straits, “Sultans of Swing” because it always seemed to be on the radio when I was driving somewhere. I can’t really say it’s a favorite but I still like to listen to it.
I ended up at Amazon checking on the Prime music and City to City is available to stream for free if you have Amazon prime. So are a lot of other songs/albums from that time so I am going to be busy for a while reliving my youth.
Ooh, look! Kansas! …
Very, very evocative of a specific time for me.
I grew up in central New Jersey. My favorite uncle was a fisherman with a “Beach Buggy” license for his pickup truck. A couple of times each summer, he’d pick me up at an ungodly hour of the morning, and we’d drive down to Island Beach State Park (the best days were when I could ride in the bed of the truck under the cap; don’t ask me why, it just seemed cool). We’d go past all of the pavilions, and then Uncle Bruce would pull over, let a little air out of the tires, put the truck into 4WD, and we’d drive out onto the beach. He’d get out a couple of lawn chairs, half a dozen surf-fishing poles and sand-spikes, and we’d fish all morning. The beach would be almost completely empty (unlike the wall-to-wall people a bit further north), and we’d just sit around and fish.
For whatever reason, “Baker Street” is the song that I associate with those trips. There are one or two other pop songs that will invoke those memories (and I can’t remember which ones they are right now), but it’s “Baker Street” first and foremost that sends me back to the Jersey Shore.
