1984 - More about linguistic tyranny than totalitarianism

The only innovation in Oceania is technology used to help improve the detection of dissidents. Orwell goes to great length IIRC explaining how people are ultimately betrayed by the Thought Police detecting their nervous ticks and tells. Not only can you be arrested for actual rebellion. You can be arrested for just acting a little “off” (thoughtcrime).
IMHO, more troubling that the surveillance technology or institutional bureaucracy of a totalitarian state is the notion of “doublethink”. Basically it’s how people can convince themselves they are doing right, even as they commit atrocities or act against their own self interest.
