1988 Fiero

There are a few kit cars that use the Chevy s10 body. There are cheap and easy to get so you might want to try one of these.

I would just like to add to the MR2’s wonderful reputation. I am the proud owner of a 1991 MR2, and formally a 1986 MR2. Both of them were down right dependable cars. My MR2 never let me down. The only issue I had with my 1986 was a failed spark plug wire, at 186k miles. My 1991 has 116K and runs flawlessly. The 1986 was a joy to drive, it felt like a gocart. The 1991 feels more like a sports car, a little more sold.

The only reasion I dont have the 86 still is an accident. I was hit in the driver door by a 1991 camero at about 45 miles an hr. The Mr2 took the hit, and I walked away…My MR2 was totaled, but I walked away…

I currently own an '85 MR2 and I agree with the previous posters… it’s a great car. It has over 179k miles on it (I bought it at 172k in May) and is still amazingly fun to drive. However, getting anything fixed is expensive and a big pain. New brake rotors? $400 for the parts, plus another $200 for labor.

I can’t say anything from first-hand experience about the Fiero but what I’ve heard is that 1) Fieros are very low quality, 2) the design of the Fiero makes it easy to dramatically change the body, which is why the kit cars are Fieros, and 3) a 4-cylinder Fiero is no match for my car, but a V6 Fiero would be about even.

(No, my name has nothing to do with the car.)

I guess I should give my opinon on the Fiero

My father has a 1987 Feiro GT. For those who are unaware the GT is a much better looking car than the SE. It looks a lot like a MKII MR2, as the SE looks like a MKI. Its a very good looking car. My father has kept it in pristine condition.

Now for the problems in the past 3 years

  1. transmission replacement $1200
  2. clutch replacement $1000
  3. Fuel pump issues $???
  4. Overheating and water loss $???

And issues about the car in general

  1. Even with the V6 in it, its an underpowered car
  2. The car is heavy as hell (see above)
  3. The car has a very rough ride. Hit a pebble it feels like you’ve hit a grapefruit sized rock
  4. interior styling is odd – not even a glovebox
  5. no trunk – small (smaller than an MR2) storage space in the back, but you have to open the engine compartment to get to it

so, in the end, if you want a midengine sports car – find yourself an MR2
