I’d heard something similar…but couldn’t tell you the provenance.
The story I heard was that they wanted to do Saturn’s rings, but couldn’t get the effects right. But Trumbull got his second chance in Silent Running.
(No idea if this is true…but, as far as I’m concerned, the passage of Saturn’s Rings in Silent Running is not at all impressive.)
