I think “Dave” was a direct reflection of the “Right Stuff” crew as they were presented by NASA to the public in the '60s: calm, cool, scientists/technocrats, rational, analytical.
Compare/contrast with Ridley Scott’s “Space Truckers” in Alien, and the bad-ass, elite “Space Marines” that get their asses handed to them by a xenomorph (“A what?” Okay, a lot of xenomorphs) in Aliens.
The Xenomorphs in Aliens are, ironically, a textbook example of the Inverse Ninja Rule in effect.
But back to the subject at hand- I try not to look too deeply into 2001. It’s a great film and I take something different away from it each time I see it, but I tend to agree with people who say it’s about the evolution of Mankind.
It’s a good film to discuss with friends over a few drinks, IMHO, because everyone has a different interpretation of what it’s all about.
