Whoa! Did you see _that?_ Can Vince Young play some football or what? I do believe that was the most impressive individual performance I’ve ever witnessed.

Lets see now: For the SDMB Guru Award: (This award is very important and bestows much prestige and untold riches on the winner)

#1) **Me** at 6-2
#2) **dalej42** at 5-2 (Dude, you shoulda’ took a flyer on the Ga./WV game)
#Last)\*\* Omniscient\*\* at 4-4 (Cheer up. At least you bettered the Big Ten’s bowl record)

Congrats to Texas. Now! Anybody want to talk some NCAA Swimming and Diving?

Auburn Men; National Champs in 2003, 2004, 2005. Goin’ for a four-peat!
Auburn Women; National Champs in 2002, 2003, 2004, and second in 2005. (Georgia had some, (heh) _fast_ girls in the water last year.)

It’s been fun. As a token of y’alls appreciation, I will accept money, whiskey, or dates with Ashley Judd.

> Reggie Bush attempting that boneheaded lateral. I like the idea of trying to make a play, but in that situation you didn’t need the help. D-U-M, dumb!
>
> The referee’s non-review of the Vince Young lateral. Pretty major gaffe considering how readily they reviewed plays over the span of the rest of the game.
>
> The very close non-fumble call on the Texas catch in the third quarter. I thought it was a catch and a fumble personally, but it was far too close to get upset about.

You forgot one huge call. The Texas interception that was ruled incomplete and wasn’t reviewed. That kept a USC drive alive, a drive that led to points.

They did blow it on Young’s lateral, but that was on the USC 10 yard line, and the way things were going Texas would have likely punched it in anyway.

> [@](#):
>
> Pete Carroll going for it on 4th down in the first half by sneaking Matt Leinart with an empty backfield. I like the call to go for it on that part of the field, but when you have 2 stud RBs and a immoble QB that was a awful play call.

Looked dumb to me too.

> [@](#):
>
> The USC offense being unable to get a quick snap off following the 1st half Texas INT at the goalline. They had plenty of time to snap the ball before the review overturned the call and gave the ball to Texas, but confusion cost them the chance.

I think Texas would have called a timeout for review on that one. Still USC could have _tried_ to get a play started.

> [@](#):
>
> Pete Carroll wasting his final timeout before the 2-point conversion. Monumentally stupid. In the postgame he seemed that he called it because he was caught off guard by the choice to go for 2. Duh! A PAT would have been meaningless, you should have been ready for the 2-pt play. There’s no excuse for not being ready for that, and even if you weren;t ready you save that timeout with 20 second left down 3!!!

Yep. Bad preparation by the head coach.

> [@](#):
>
> IMHO, Pete Carroll lost this game. Not for going for it on 4th down, but for wasting TOs and not using his talent. Reggie Bush made a really dumb play, but I’ll allow a 20 year old kid some slack when trying to make something happen. Pete Carroll is making huge coin and is expected to be prepared in for contingencies. God he choked. Thats why he doesn’t belong in the NFL.

I don’t think USC put the ball in Bush’s hands enough. Vince Young carried Texas, but Bush didn’t get a chance to carry USC. In big games, let the studs get it done!

I either missed this play or forgot about it, when did it happen?

3rd quarter. Somewhere around the Texas 40 yard line.Texas DB jumped up, intercepted pass, landed on his back. Ground jarred the ball loose and the ball rolled out of bounds. Refs called incomplete, announcers looked at replays and called it an interception, but officials continued play with no review.

Ah, I do recall that. I have no recollection of the announcers saying it was a INT. They said it was close, and maybe could have been reviewed but calling it a blown call is pretty silly. By any definition I know of that was not a catch. The player lost control of the ball when his back hit the ground…by rule thats an incomplete pass. It’s the whole “make a football move” story.

It isn’t comparable to the Texas WRs dropped/fumbled catch. It certainly could have gone either way, but there’s at least room for debate. Not the case with the Texas INT, it’s not even debatable.

A lot of “Why’s” in that game, none bigger than ‘Why do they put Texas cheerleaders in those hokey outfits??’

I only saw the first half, too late for me again. But man, if I had Reggie Bush, I sure would have put the ball in his hands (and hope it stays there) as often as I could. Only 13 carries?

A small correction on what I posted earlier: The not-called interception happened in the second quarter, not the third.

Well, they did. Judging from your comments, I don’t think you did see the play. Did you go to pee or something? Watch a replay.

_NO._
For example, if the DB had been an offensive player in the end zone, the correct call would have been “Touchdown”, as he had control of the ball. The ball didn’t come loose until after he hit the ground.

> [@](#):
>

_WRONG._
I was going to post a link to the thread in MPSIMS on this game, but I see you’ve already posted there. Look at posts number 32, 35, 38 and 126 ((And there may be more) in that thread. It was a blown call. More damaging to Texas by far than the knee on the ground play was to USC. Texas was going to score on the “knee” drive anyway.

> [@The Big Cheese](#):
>

I’ve been pondering that myself. They don’t look too bad from behind, though. Maybe the guy that designed the outfits likes it doggy-style?

All-in-all it was a great game. USC got whupped in their own backyard, 🆒 ABC’s gotta’ be pleased with whatever ratings they got, and it’s a warm, sunny day outside. 😃
Gotta’ go.

The ‘not called int’ was in the 2nd quarter. Somewhat deep pass , UT guy jumped up, grabbed it, fell back on his back, his legs came up. As soon as he hit ground, the ball bounced out. He did have it a while, I think it should have been an int, and USC went on to a score (fg?)

No, I very clearly remember the play. I didn’t know what you were refering to because you said the play was a blown call. There wasn’t the least bit on contraversy on that call. Even the Texas player didn’t lobby his own case.

Go here: [http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2004/2004\_football\_rules.pdf](http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2004/2004_football_rules.pdf)

On page 40 you’ll see the rules defined as this:

> [@](#):
>
> **Catch, Interception, Recovery**
> ARTICLE 7. A catch is an act of establishing player possession of a live ball in flight.
> a. Acatch of an opponent’s fumble or pass is an interception.
> b. Securing player possession of a live ball after it strikes the ground is “recovering it.’’
> **c. To catch, intercept or recover a ball, a player who leaves his feet to make a catch, interception or recovery must have the ball in his possession when he first returns to the ground inbounds or is so held that the deadball provisions of Rule 4-1-3-p apply (A.R. 2-2-7-I-V and A.R. 7-3-6-IV).**
>
1. If one foot first lands inbounds and the receiver has possession and
> control of the ball, it is a catch or interception even though a subsequent
> step or fall takes the receiver out of bounds.
> \*\*2. Loss of ball simultaneous to returning to the ground is not a catch,
> interception or recovery.\*\*d. A catch by any kneeling or prone inbounds player is a completion or
> interception (Rules 7-3-1 and 2 and 7-3-6 and 7).
> **e. When in question, the catch, recovery or interception is not completed.**
The guy simply did not catch the ball, by rule. The only possible room for wiggle is saying that the guy caught it, maintained possession throughout the impact with the ground and then bobbled it while laying on the ground well after the play. That’s a stretch to say the least.

> [@](#):
>
> For example, if the DB had been an offensive player in the end zone, the correct call would have been “Touchdown”, as he had control of the ball. The ball didn’t come loose until after he hit the ground.

Not true. If the ball comes loose when you hit the ground, in the end zone or not, it’s an incomplete pass under all circumstances. The play would have to have been whistled dead before his losing possession for it to be a catch. You must have possession of the ball _after_ landing, not during.

The knee-down non-review isn’t much of a point of contention. I think everyone agrees that Texas probably would have scored there, not that it’s a certainty.

The real point of contention is the Texas WRs dropped catch/incomplete pass in the 3rd quarter. I’m not going to agrue that it was a blown call, and it was reviewed so the officials determined that the WR did not have possession, but it was at least open for interpretation while the Texas INT was not. Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t understand the rules and needs to take off the “Hook 'Em” T-shirt.

> [@](#):
>
> USC got whupped in their own backyard,

Dude, you’re drunk. They won the game by 3 points and very likely would have been in overtime had Pete Carroll saved a time out or two. Whupped? And you tried calling me biased earlier…sheesh.

From your cite: "c. To catch, intercept or recover a ball, a player who leaves his feet to make a catch, interception or recovery **must have the ball in his possession when he first returns to the ground inbounds** …’

He did have the ball in his possession when he first returned to the ground. Should have been an interception. End of story.

Interesting that you totally ingore the clarification directly below that bullet:

“2. Loss of ball simultaneous to returning to the ground is not a catch,
interception or recovery.”

The guy lost the ball when he hit the ground, incomplete pass. The replay booth didn’t even warrant a review, and if it were a debatable call Mack Brown would have barked for one. The play happened about 3 feet from the Texas sideline. The Texas WR had possession of his dropped catch later in the game longer than that DB did, and that play was reviewed and called incomplete. Objectivity is a wonderful thing.

I don’t think I’ve _ever_ heard a subset of fans from the WINNING team being so pissy about god knows what.

I’ll give this one more try:

_"C. must have the ball in his possession when he first returns to the ground inbounds…’_
“2.\* Loss of ball simultaneous to returning to the ground is not a catch”\*

It looked like he lost control of the ball after he contacted the ground.

According to the talking heads on some syndicated radio show my truck radio picked up yesterday, both the Knee on the Ground play and the Interception That Wasn’t play happened while the monitor in the replay booth was not working. If so, that’s why neither ruling was reviewed. “Warranted” didn’t figure in.

YOU are the one who started whining about the refs. Others have only pointed out that the questionable calls went both ways.

Note: I’ve been a Texas fan for exactly one game (this one).

I think I agree with this, but not quite sure. I seem to remember as he went up for the ball, he came down with a foot in bounds first. One foot down, control of the ball = catch. He \*then \* fell to the ground back first and the ball came out. If, however, he went up and landed on his back and the ball popped out I would say “no catch.” The announcers certainly were leaning toward “catch.”

I have to disagree with the call to go for 4th down at the end of the game. It was the 44 yard line, right? If you punt, you at gain \*at least \*24 yards, and with a good punt you possibly put Texas having to go 90+ yards to win in instead of 56.

Young scored with 19 seconds left. That’s not a lot of wiggle room. As good as they were moving the ball, I suspect they would have needed more than those 19 seconds if thesy had to start from their own 10 or 20 yard line.

Anyhoo, as a LSU alum, I was most pleased with the absolute beat down the Tigers put on Miami. Total domination. No first downs in the last 40+ minutes of the game? 3 net yards in the second half? I’m looking forward to next year. We should be in the hunt.

I heard that said about the Vince Young knee-down no call. But I haven’t heard it in regards to the INT. The plays happened a long time apart and there were successful reviews in between them happenning. Either there was a really extraordinary coincidence of two intermitent booth malfunctions, or that reporting was incorrect.

Um, you may want to reread my first post if you though I was whining about the refs. I commented on the Vince Young non-review. Called it a gaffe, but you didn’t see me saying it decided the game. Then I said the Texas non-fumble call was nothing to get upset about. Quit putting words into my mouth.

Doesn’t make sense, but things like this happen a lot with rankings. Georgia beat LSU by 20 in the SEC Championship Game. LSU had a great bowl win and Georgia lost their bowl by 3 points. Now LSU’s ranked ahead of Georgia. Go figger. 😕

But you wrote:\*"The referee’s non-review of the Vince Young lateral. Pretty major gaffe considering how readily they reviewed plays over the span of the rest of the game.

The very close non-fumble call on the Texas catch in the third quarter. I thought it was a catch and a fumble personally, but it was far too close to get upset about."\*

That in addition to _THIS_ on Jan 3rd: _“Did anyone catch the Iowa/Florida game? Jesus the refs rat0fucked Iowa in that one. Rarely do I complain about officiating, but between this game and the Michigan/Nebraska game the Bowl officials should be jailed.”_

I know you said you’re an Illinois guy, but are you _SURE_ you didn’t go to Alabama? If you ask those people, they never get beat. They either win or get cheated by the refs…

Since when is commenting on officiating the same thing as whining? I don’t have a pony in the race, so I think I can be reasonably objective when saying if a call was questionable or not.

I won’t say I never mentioned officiating, but to call it whining is misrepresenting things. As it applies to the Rose Bowl I wasn’t really even critical. I thought the UF/Iowa game was ugly but I was largely repeating what the TV guys said so I’m not feeling like I went out on a limb there.
