2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

Best of luck to South Africa, Mexico and Uruguay. In other words, I hope those cheating bastards France are back on a plane to Paris as soon as possible.

Gooooool!

Tshabalala awesome strike into the cobwebs opens the scoring at WC 2010!

SA 1 Mexico 0

Khune…world class.

Who’s the ref talking to on that mic?

Are those barriers on the benches to protect the players from things thrown from the stands?

Why are a few players wearing the ref’s color blue armbands?

Is that kind of one-on-one goal the common play? It seems like they’re mostly playing a game that looks like hockey to me (cross the puck/ball in front and another player hits it in).

The armband-wearing players are the Captains of each team.

Goool!. Mexico ties it.

Rafa Marquez makes it even aided by some awful SA defending.

Makes for an exciting finish…

Blue armband marks the captains for each squad — normally, there’s no particular color requirement.

Post denies Bafana Bafana the winner…thrilling finish!

Mexico’s goalkeeper sucks

Wow, just wow. Mexico is lucky to get away with a tie. And there was one play after that where SA had a decent chance if the centering pass was times just a little bit better.

One one tie in the opener. Doesn’t really help either team – Mexico, in particular, must be feeling pretty shitty as on paper this was a must win for them. Then again, they didn’t deserve better.

MOM, in my opinion, Kholer, SA’s keeper.

Next, France/Uruguay @2:30 EST. If there’s a winner there, they’ll be sitting pretty.

Those fucking horns droning on in the background are going to get old fast. In fact they’ve already annoying me no end.

Nice opening match though.

How come nobody’s mentioned the missed penalty call yet?

South Africa should have taken this one. They were terrible during the first half but by the last fifteen minutes were starting to get organized and when they came back for the last half they looked like a different team. I started cheering for them and am very frustrated now by the result. Pity the technical quality of their players is so low; if they only could get their passes to be a bit more accurate…

I didn’t spot any incorrect offside decisions, so I’m not sure what people are referring to there.

The vuvuzelas (droning horns) don’t bother me, as long as they don’t catch on elsewhere. I imagine they won’t be as pervasive at games not involving SA, but anyway, it’s only a month. For now, they’re a novelty to me. World Cups tend to have these quirky things you remember them for.

ummm… looks like you misspelled ‘Mexico’

I dunno, I wanted Mexico to win, but South Africa could have won it, and it certainly wouldn’t have been an injustice.

One of the BBC reporters said they were like tinnitus only more annoying.

wroooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

mmmmmmmmm…

Did anyone else watch it on Univision? I don’t have cable. I understand many of the Spanish soccer terms, but a lot of the commentary eludes me. I wanted to shoot the TV everytime that announcer started braying “SHA BA LA LAH!!1!” like he was singing an obnoxious refrain whenever Tshabalala touched the ball. It wasn’t funny the first time and it was plain offensive the 20th. Was I missing some reason his director didn’t throw a brick at him when he did that?

So, regarding this offside thing, I hear that ESPN have brought in Martin Tyler (well-known and very experienced British commentator) for their US coverage, and he and his equally British co-commentator Efan Ekoku were going on about the “incorrect” offside call against Mexico for a good ten minutes afterwards? Jesus wept.
