2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

Tweet from @fivethirtyeight: South America: 10 Wins, 2 Draws, 0 Losses. 21 GF, 4 GA. Has any continent ever so dominated the group stage?

And Palermo scored. He is Argentina´s most beloved player.
Great moment.

Correction: Switzerland, as per post 1059 is NOT at +1. They at 0 goal differential. Plus one for their win against us, minus one for their loss to Chile.

It’s Spain that’s at +1, thus the group standings.

Australia vs Serbia 2:30 P.M. EST[/size]**

Should be quite a day!

As a River Plate fan I beg to differ…

however I am very glad that now is the opposing team who suffers his impossible goals

At the end today I chanted with all the rest of the people in the Café “PALEEEERMOOOO! PALEEEEEERMOO!!!”

Aguante el Titán!

As a River Plate fan you most certainly need to beg

According to Sky Sports here are the odds on advancing:
England 4/9
USA 4/7
Slovenia 8/13
Algeria 4/1

ouch!, that hurts you… you.. you… are right :frowning:

But someday, someday we’ll be back!, perhaps my grandchildren will see it?

Yeah, I spent some time in Argentina, back in the early 90s, which totally ruined the castellano I had learned because of mi novia and her friends .. capricious (mis)use of grammar and outrageous neologisms. Good times. Oh man, ¡Cuánto tiempo!

Well, Argentina is through and I’m glad for you guys who wave the Bandera blanca y celeste. The team looks dangerous and is not yet at its peak – they’ll be one of the teams to beat to kiss the Cup in the end.

I am looking forward to tomorrow and feel the first tingles of .. no, not anxiety or concern or unease, just expectation, well 9/10 expectation, 1/10 worries. Pack ma’s!

 I came to this thread specifically to say that I’m starting to feel a bit of anxiety about tomorrow! I suspect the first ten minutes will tell us a lot…

Awesome World Cup Calendar. And I’m not even a fan.

I’m also slightly nervous, yet confident. I think there is actually a FIFA statute that says that Germany has to qualify for the second round. At least they have so far, every time they have been at a World Cup.

Even if they don’t, we should heed the immortal words of Stepi Stepanovic: “Lebbe geht weider”

I’m predicting a draw between England and Slovenia, which will probably put Slovenia and the USA through. The last time we played them we were lucky to win, and they’ve been on a good run of form since then.

They’d better bloody well show up and play like a team ranked 8th and win by a couple of goals. All optimism is out the window at this point though. Will just wait to see what happens.

My predictions for today:

Slovenia 0 - 1 England Another drab performance but just enough to progress. Won’t do much to silence the critics.

USA 2 - 0 Algeria As long as it’s the USA we saw in the second half against Slovenia.

Final standings:

          P W D L F A GD Pts
USA 3 1 2 0 5 3 +2 5
England 3 1 2 0 2 1 +1 5
Slovenia 3 1 1 1 3 3 0 4
Algeria 3 0 1 2 0 3 -3 1

Ghana 1 - 2 Germany I think this could be quite closely fought. Hoping for a good match.

Australia 1 - 3 Serbia The Serbs should have too much class here.

Final standings:

          P W D L F A GD Pts
Germany 3 2 0 1 7 4 +3 6
Serbia 3 2 0 1 4 2 +2 6
Ghana 3 1 1 1 3 3 0 4
Australia 3 0 1 2 2 8 -6 1

So, England to face Germany and USA to face Serbia next round…

I’ll take it.

Today is going to ruin me. I can’t watch the game until tonight. I’ll be running around at work all day with my fingers in my ears.

I can see Algeria drawing with the USA, and England getting a scrawpy Crouch goal to clinch anotherwise tense and sporadic 90 mins.

I’m also going to go for Ghana beating Germany and Australia getting a draw against the Serb’s.

So, we’re both still going through. Who would you prefer, Serbia or Ghana?

Hey, if we can get Germany next round then that match will pretty much make or break us.

Assuming we get through, anyway.

No, Germany are getting beat by Ghana, so nobody will be playing them.

He says, squeezing his rabbit’s foot, crossing his fingers and toes and chanting “I do believe in miracles, I do, I do.” over and over.

Well, here we go!

Go USA!
