Can someone please explain why Stacey Dash was brought on stage for three seconds to do nothing?

Well, [here](http://www.patheos.com/blogs/staceydash/2016/02/who-is-stacey-dash-and-why-did-she-just-walk-across-the-oscar-stage/) is her explanation. Remember, though, she thinks Black History Month should be ended. Near as I can tell, the joke was on her.

Yeah, I didn’t get that at all. And from the sound of silence, neither did the audience. That went over like a lead balloon.

Though in an odd way, _Spotlight_ is a bit of a vengeance film. The reporters getting back at the abusive priests and those who covered it up.

If the original three Mad Max films never existed and this was the first MM film, I believe it would have won and been honored even more. But it really is just a third sequel, no matter how much they tried to make it different.

Agreed. That, IMO was the biggest snub of the Oscars this year.

I appreciate acknowledging the lack of racial diversity (although we did see Chileans, Italians and Mexicans winning awards), and even applaud taking the Academy to task a little bit. But making the whole show about it was grating. And very few of his jokes were actually funny.

Love Chris Rock’s stand-up, but it just seemed forced last night. Like, we have to get a point across so shoe-horn some jokes to fit. And please, for future hosts, no ordering pizza, no selfies with the crowd, no girl scout cookies. Just talk about movies… that’s why we’re here.

I generally like Chris Rock _a lot_ and can definitely get on board with the message but after awhile I just wanted him to STFU. Sure, address the issue, take the piss - it’s warranted- and then move the fuck along, because now you’re beating a dead horse and having exactly the opposite of the desired effect. And what was the bit about him interviewing theater goers in Compton who had not seen or heard of any of the nominated pictures? Aside from making those folks look kind of dense, it really wasn’t useful.

I too couldn’t make sense of the choice of entrance / exit music, except as was mentioned, _Rehab_.

Liked Sam Smith’s performance, much more so than the one and only time I heard it on the radio. I’m wondering if I might have heard a weird remix or something as I remember thinking it didn’t sound “Bond like” but thought it did last night. Didn’t really like Gaga’s song or performance and don’t know what movie it is from.

I was happy with all the outcomes, though I haven’t seen _The Revenant_(and probably won’t) or _Mad Max_ (probably will).

Interesting format, as far as arranging the categories in order of the movie making process, i.e. writers, set production, etc. . . though I can imagine that may be frustrating for people who really just want to see the actors getting their awards. The few people in my department at work that watched it said they didn’t even make it to the first acting award.
Finally got to a computer. Did anyone else notice them playing “What’s Love Got To Do With It” (Tina Turner’s hit song) when Whoopie Goldberg was up? Do all black women look alike or am I missing some other connection there?
Hee. During the pre-show I was in the other room and heard Oprah talking about her gown, saying it was modelled on Bette Davis’s from _All About Eve_, so I ran out to see, only to discover it had been \*Whoopie \*speaking. Yup, all black ladies sure do sound alike :smack: It was weird because Whoopie has a pretty distinctive voice.

I thought the in memoriam segment was very well done and while it always brings a tear to my eye, setting it to _Blackbird_ had me positively sobbing.

The reporters were looking for _justice_, not vengeance. They went after the priests with typewriters and legal petitions, not with a shotgun and bloody axe. However, I also acknowledge that Hugh Glass had limited avenues for justice available to him. 🙂

The score for “Hateful Eight” wasn’t one of the 30 best movie scores of 2015. It was about as Lifetime Achievement as an Oscar has even been.

Yes! Very much a distraction. Would not have considered dip - I thought he had dental work! Could it really be chewing tabacco? Eesh.

As for Chris Rock - the only way the Academy was going to feel okay is if it was clear that Rock could say what he wanted and took shots.

I thought the “not Burning Cross racist but Sorority Racist” was really insightful. But no surprise at the overkill.

Stacey Dash was just the idiot cherry on top.

Note that Debbie’s was the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; Gena’s and Spike’s were “plain old” honorary Oscars. These were part of the broadcast for a long time, mainly so everybody could hear the winners’ speeches; the most famous one is probably Charlie Chaplin’s (the only time an honorary Oscar ended the show).

I’m pretty sure they cut the audience microphones, but since the performer is on stage, you can hear a little of the applause from that microphone.

There was also applause when it ended, but that may have been more for the song; usually, everybody, including the voiceover announcer, stays silent as they fade to black.

I did notice a couple of things in the closing credits; there were something like six credits for the people who worked on Lady Gaga (i.e. her hairstylist, her costume designer, and so on), and they gave Anthony Daniels a credit as C-3PO.

I noticed that the audio for Minions clip was obviously pre-recorded; they just added the sub-title with the winner’s name.

For the presentation by Woody and Buzz Lightyear, it sounded like they actually had Hanks and Allen doing the voices, including the winner’s name. Did they record a take with each of the five nominees’ names? Was the voice-over done live? Or were they given the winner’s name by PWC in advance?

It looked like the mouth movements matched “Inside Out”; I am guessing they had five versions ready, and were told by PWC which one to use.

Either that, or they only animated one version, and hoped that all of the rumors as to how much of a lock _Inside Out_ was to win were true…

No way was _Inside Out_ NOT going to win. The last Pixar offering that didn’t win was _Cars 2_. I’d be surprised to hear they actually recorded all 5 versions. Best Animated Film is consistently the most sure thing of the night, especially sinxe The Good Dinosaur wasn’t also nominated.

They’ve done this before with animated segments and the story goes that a Price Waterhouse rep is in the control booth with the director, who has all 5 winners prerecorded as possible winners. Then the envelope is opened in there and the producer told which of the 5 to “play”.

I am one hundred percent confident they taped all five versions and had Tim Allen simply say say different movie names. You’d only have to change a few seconds of the animation; it would otherwise be identical.

As much of a lock as you think Inside Out was, why take a chance on either blowing that moment or blowing the much-ballyhooed secrecy of the winners being leaked?

Yeah, I know. I never get them right. And yeah, I do like DiCaprio as an actor and probably as a person too (if I ever met him and if he gave a shit… more “ifs” than “Market Garden”). I just Really thought it was Matt Damon’s year.
And Saoirse Ronan’s. She did everything right & caught a back-hand to the face for her trouble.

Someone told me once that you have to stop using the word “fair” when you’re 12. Its just that “Listen, You Fucking Assholes…” just seems to bounce off Hollywood.

It’s unrelated to this year’s Oscar ceremony, but I remember a couple of years ago during the Golden Globes ceremony that the official Twitter feed was announcing the winners about thirty seconds or a minute before the envelopes were opened on stage. So at least in that case, someone else had a list of winners. I think the Academy Awards are much more strict about limiting who knows the names of the winners.

(I believe the winners at the Oscars are supposed to leave the statuette behind at the end of the night so it can be engraved. But I think most people who won the thing would want to show it off at the after parties.)

Didn’t get to see the broadcast at all (I’m in a terrible time zone for it), and didn’t even manage to see many of the nominees this year. So except for bafflement at the Best Picture choice (which I _did_ see and which I expressed in the thread for that movie, so I won’t rehash it here), I have just one contribution, a Cafe Society-style pet peeve of mine that I get to air every year around this time. If you’ll indulge me…

Stop saying the Oscars are too long!! Please! I skimmed a couple recaps of the show while reading the news this morning and the tired complaint about the ceremony going on too long was mentioned in all of them! Okay, I didn’t see _this_ broadcast, but in past years I’ve never had an issue with the length. Frankly I’ve more often felt annoyance at the producers’ rude and ham-handed attempts to rush people off the stage. The Oscars are a once a year event for people who enjoy movies, and it’s only 3-4 hours. No one complains that the Superbowl is too long, and that goes on at least as long. Can we please retire this cliche?

Okay, rant over - thanks for letting me get that off my chest. 😃

I noticed that DeCaprio’s personal chef is listed in “The Revenant” credits. So much for stories of how he suffered during the filming.

Thanks for the info about Anthony Daniels. He must have a great contract with Disney seeing as how anybody could have been in that suit and the sound was obviously a pre-record.
