I can’t disagree. Richard Harris was a fine actor but his Dumbledore was dull and croaky. ETA: I saw Gambon in _Krapp’s Last Tape_ on stage. He was a consummate Pinterian (and whatever adjective goes with Beckett) actor, conveying maximum emotional content with minimal words and movement. ---

Michael Gambon was always someone I knew of, but didn’t actually watch too often. I did see him in The Storyteller series about Greek Myths, and knew he was The Singing Detective and Maigret, but I didn’t watch those. ---

I mean, Richard Harris did capture the whimsy and “sparky eyes” of Dumbledore, but Gambon played a less old seeming Dumbledore and even though Dumbledore is massively old, he was always very youthful and quick moving. I think Gambon was much better for the big Dumbledore moments in Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince than Richard Harris ever would have been. ---
