That’s sad news, and it seems likely to be the end of an era. OTOH, SI has been a hollow shell of what it once was for years now (at least dating back to when Meredith bought it) — I used to be an avid reader of the website (and the hard-copy magazine, too), but the content and quality had really gone downhill, and I’d given up on trying to read it a few years back.
It would have at least been symbolic if they’d have chosen NIL. The death of the amateur college athlete and the death of sports journalism all in one. That it would have been a non-person would have been even more resonant as they’ll be replaced by terrible AI and the possibly NFL-owned ESPN.
It’s too early for a dedicated 2024 thread, but…oh, who is anybody kidding; even if Simone Biles wins six gold medals, the choice is going to be between:
(a) Patrick Mahomes, and
(b) Patrick Mahomes & Travis Kelce (and see if you can squeeze Kelce’s girlfriend, whatshername, Tyler something), in a desperate attempt to keep the magazine afloat
I don’t think it’s that much of a slam dunk. It’s an Olympic year and the first real post Covid Olympics so there’s a chance a summer Olympian or team wins it
Will there even be an award this year? They may be defunct in a few months.
That’s pretty much what I said in 2021. The winner that year: Tom Brady.
As I said in another thread, SI has resorted to using AI to write some of its articles for some time now. The publication is in huge trouble.
But then, I think most of the old publications are.
