LONDON (AP) — Financier and philanthropist Jacob Rothschild, of the renowned Rothschild banking dynasty, has died at 87, his family said Monday. Rothschild began his career in the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, in 1963, before breaking away to start businesses and charitable organizations. His family paid tribute to him in a statement. “Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people’s lives, a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather,” his family said. ---

Another wrestling death. [Virgil](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgil_(wrestler)), who famously worked alongside The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, has died at age 61. Seems quite young for dementia and yet another wrestler dying before old age. ---

So my father-in-law suggested recently doing a death pool (he and I are very competitive: fantasy leagues, Bowl Pick-Ems, March Madness, etc). We agreed to do some research and hold our official list announcement/kick-off on February 29. I may have left out the part where I’ve been actually playing in a death pool for the past 10 or so years, and won the SDMB one last year. Yeah I may be hustling him a bit. I went into the whole thing playing dumb (“Wait, you get points if._someone dies??!_ I’ve never heard of such a thing. Hmm, sounds interesting. OK, here are some rules that I happened to stumble across on the Interwebs… 😃”) My wife, mother-in-law and kids are playing too (I do feel pretty guilty having my 13- and 15-year old doing this, but once they heard about it, we couldn’t keep them out. I hope this doesn’t turn them into psychos. ETA: We’ve made it perfectly clear that there’s no cheering when you score points. _I_ may be a sick fuck, but I’d like my kids to grow up better than me). Anyway, I was convinced I was going to have an insurmountable lead by the end of the first weekend of the competition. Unfortunately, my ringer died two days too soon. No one sees anyone’s list til tonight when they officially go up on the board. From what I’ve picked up from my kids and mother-in-law and wife talking, there’s is mostly very famous old people, not much research. I go deep with English television presenters, retired rugby players and authors. ---

I have been avoiding looking at my death pool since I thought I had taken both Jonnie Irwin and Toby Keith off my list. Turns out only Toby Keith is missing. I am sure **Baker** will get to the bottom of my missing points for both Jonnie and Bobby Hehir. Meanwhile, I finally checked my list thoroughly and found that Newcastle Councilor Jason Smith died in January at age 50. He was a local politician in Newcastle UK. Locally known enough for a number of news stories to be written about him when he stepped down (and of course earlier when he won his elections) ---

I;m beginning to think I’m making too many mistakes. **Registered at Last** I left off the countings. Ral was almost but not quite the last player to post on 12/31 and somehow I skipped over them, leaving out their picks in the count. So they did indeed have Jonnie Irwin and Bobby Hehir. They also had Jason Smith. As we have said celebrity is hard to define, but this guy did get news stories in the UK. Maybe during the rest of the year we can work on defining celebrity, but for now **RAL** will get the points. It will put them in the lead. Newcastle, BTW, is about the same size as Newark or Lincoln NE or Saint Paul. I certainly wouldn’t consider a member of the city council of any of those cities a celebrity. YMMV. ---
